Actually, each UK Trident sub carries 16 ICBMs but, as you say, this whole talk of nuclear confrontation is rather silly.

I think the major effect will simply be that Russia's reputation as a stable and responsible major power will take a hammering, and their influence on the international stage will be reduced, not enhanced. I can't see foreign companies being more likely to pump much-needed capital into the Russian economy, either...

And Europe has enough to wipe Russia off the map. A moot point however because the use of nuclear weapons by any side would most likely result in WWIII.

yes well i did say that a nuclear war would end in defeat for all involved

And as for your final comment i would like to change it. The use of nuclear weapons by any side WOULD END, not start WW3. Becuase if there is one thing you can be sure of it is that a nuclear missile will not be fired solo. They will be fired in their hundreds all around the globe.

Exactly. Russia certainly wouldnt have tried pulling anything like this in 1998. Economy on the brink of collapse, bowing to their economic lords and masters for some table scraps, no sir

Neonplanet, totally agree. We can only hope that nothing like it ever happens.

The use of nuclear weapons would be WWIII.

They are launched, they reach their targets. Thats WWIII over with.

The films made about it, assuming there is anyone about to do it, would be crap. Certainly nothing as good as Platoon will come out of WWIII.

That, my ranting Russian friend is the first sensible thing you have said. Thats the catch with nuclear weapons, you can't actually use them. Its like being armed with a grenade in a lift. What you going to do? Blow everyone up or not use it?

    Utterly pathetic.

As you drew parallels between this conflict and Germany's assault on Poland in WWII, it is only pertinent that i do the same.

In 1990 Iraq attacked Kuwait, for it in 1991 to Iraq the USA with allies have attacked. Russia attacked Georgia, that that is not visible that Georgia are going to protect military operations against Russia. So soon Russia will attack Estonia.

Not that I think for a minute this will happen, but if it did, it would be a severe miscalculation.

There would be no doubt about Russia's intention to effectively re-establish the old Soviet Union by a different name, and the West would go back into a fully-fledged Cold War footing. Russia would be economically isolated, left trying to match the West's defence spending, and that didn't work out too well for you before, did it?

can we have an end to all this willy waving
, frankly it's so very sad that so many "little boys and chickenhawks" from east and west are so keen to start another cold war

Lol can you imagine if we got involved in nuclear war.. If we launched one we would have to just whistle and point at Germany or something

Would bring new meaning to the phrase "3 strikes and you're out".
