    Dream Job

I'm just wondering if anybody had a dream job if they were younger.
    What was it?
What job do you have know?
Why didn't you get your dream job?

I'm one of the few people that can say they've got their dream job and i wouldn't change it for the world. Well perhaps on cold or really wet days for 20 mins!

    Re: Dream Job

My dream job was to be a fast jet pilot in the RAF, but because I had to use an inhaler when I was about 5, I wasnt allowed to join
Not sure if I've got the right person, but still. Handscombmp was it you that was the pilot?
Are there any such limitations to be a commercial pilot?
Being a pilot is still what I want to do, whether its fixed or rotary wing

Yeah i'm the pilot. It's commercial as i too wanted to be a fast jet pilot but i need glasses so i couldn't join the RAF.
I know the limitations aren't as strict but i'm not quite sure about inhalers. I think it may be if you haven't had an attack in 5 years but i'm not 100%. I'll go and see for you.

    Re: Dream Job

That would be great thanks Ive been off inhalers for the last 14ish years, and i never had full on asthma, just a very very slight tight chest when i exercised. How did you get in to being a commercial pilot (applying, training etc)?

You need to have the JAA 1 certificate to become a commerical pilot so it look like you might not be disqualified.

I finished my A Levels at 18 and was going to have a gap year before i went to uni, but i already knew i wanted to become a pilot. At 19 a mate told me about a thomas cook sponsered flying course (don't know if they do it anymore) and i applyed for that thinking if i don't get in i can just go to uni and try again later.
Well i was luck and i passed all their tests and had training for 18 months going from no flying to commercial pilot.
The hardest part though was getting the £50K i needed to pay them incase i couldn't complete my training which they've paid be back now
I've just recently come of from always having to fly with a senior captain to being an ordinary first officer.

    Re: Dream Job

My dream job or aspiration was to become a pilot someday. Then 9/11 happened and then I stumbled upon Air Crash Investigation series and it sort of became less and less appealing.
I still do think about being one though

    I was there pre-9/11
I've heard now because of that you can't get access to the cockpit anymore. Plus I'm not a little kid as I was back then and most likely because of my skin colour/race they'll most definately not let me near there

    Re: Dream Job

The piloting profession is one of those careers which a lot of people dream about. It takes a certain kind of person and a lot of drive to make it happen.

I went to the USA to do my flight training (Cost about £22,000 for FAA certificates) with a plan to move to Africa and fly people on Safari around the bush when my US visa ran out. I got married instead.

The airlines were never my thing, I get bored easily and I couldn't live with the low pay over here. I've been doing a little charter stuff and that's good fun here on the West Coast, but I'll probably head up to Alaska next summer.

If you really want it, then remember that brick walls are there to stop people who don't want something enough. Your first step, regardless of what civilian aviation career you desire, would probably be an FAA Private Pilot Certificate in the USA. It will cost about £4000, and if you contact me I can reccomend a good school in the warm Florida weather or if you want to come in the summer then here in Oregon.

If you need motivation (and a word of caution, this IS a dangerous career), have a look at this website: http://shaunlunt.typepad.com/

    Re: Dream Job

Its funny, the last person i spoke to who said they actually liked their job, was also having great difficulties making ends meet.

She'd had dancing lessons since she was 7, and makes a in London hard to live on wage of 25k when you consider the effort and physical fitness demanded, that's not much, by the time you've put in costs it really is hard to make ends meet. The thing is she was a classicly trained ballet dancer, and that is what she really loved, only the demand for mixed race skin dancers, in an already competitive environment she found very hard, leaving her with mostly hiphop/modern.

Its just quite funny to meet someone who was complaining that they can't even moonlight at titty bars any more because of the recession, who still incredibly loves every aspect of their job.

I'm pretty certain that's for hayfever. I wasn't allowed to go for aircrew because I've had pre-puberty asthma. That was when I checked 4 years ago though. It could be a case of "Beggars can't be choosers" nowadays. There's other odd limitations like the length of your femur bone (too long and you would lose your knees if you ejected from an aircraft).

I want to be a pilot as well, preferably in helicopters (seems more interesting than large commercial jets). However, due my above medical history, it's highly unlikely I'd get employed or get the experience.

    Re: Dream Job

The civilian medical for helicopters is the same as for fixed wing. Training is even more expensive (I'm taking lessons for an add-on), but the job market, at least in the US, is much better. Employment only requires a medical, if you have it, there are no other medical requirements. Again, training is cheaper in the USA (even with the worse exchange rate) and I can reccomend a school (and instructor). If nothing else, get a Private certificate. It's valid in the UK (actually with more priveledges than the UK ticket) and looks great on a CV for any job you settle on.

I can check with an AME over here, but I doubt if pre-pubity asthma is a bar to a medical.

Remember the brick wall? If you want it enough...

    Re: Dream Job

I've had a couple of dream Job
at 5 I wanted to drive a steam train
at 7 a deep sea diver
at 16 I wanted to make computer chips
at 20 I wanted to write computer games

There are not many steam trains, I'm not a very good swimmer, 3 years at university made me realise I wasn't too keen on making chips and 2 years programming ASM and C to draw pretty triangles on a screen only for Direct3D to turn up turned me away from computer games.

So the dreams have ending with Database work, I'd like to thank the good people at Oracle for their software.
