Yep I'm liking the PRC200 even more after seeing that vid, cheers Butuz.
Another brand I found last night that I'm really taken with is Christopher Ward, seems like a hell of a lot of watch for not a lot of cash and I can only find good things said about them on teh interwebby.
I particularly like the C3 Malvern Chronograph range and some are within your price range.

I especially like this one from the above link:

Thanks for those links Jim. I think the PRC (strapped version) is far nice than the bracelet model . Go with what you like guys, this seems like the best we've seen so far I think
Tissot is a great brand with quite a history as well ~ even if it doesn't count much in most folks decision making. Just remember that you can get service from the Swatch group anywhere in the world and if not, almost any watchmaker will be able to replace the battery, heck, even you can do it yourself but would need to have it waterproof tested (for the seals that is).
Waterproofing tests for Swatch just raise the airpressure inside a sealed dome. It is only companies like Audemars Piguet and Rolex etc that do an actual water test before passing a watch after manufacture though.
/sighs
Oh how I wish I could have a nice watch like that. It's always intrigued me, what it would be like to have a really nice time piece.
But not for me. I'm a digital only man.

I'll never ever go back to a boring digital watch, unless my life depends on it, in which case I'd want to be wearing both...

Well, I have a weird situation where I cant tell the time on an analogue clock face. Not sure why. Just can't. Never could. When I "learned" at school, I just memorised the flash cards and the tears in them, and the faded patches, for the time they showed them. Luckily they had the digital time on the back so I sussed them. Sounds pathetic now.
I'm not sure if it has a scientific name, but it's like dyslexia (I guess) but just with clocks.
It's so weird as to be awkward if there are no digital clocks about.
Hence, I have worn a digital watch almost my entire life. You learn at a young age not to take it off. I do now, but I used to live with mine, and I look at it a lot more than I need so I know what the time is incase anyone asks.
I once delivered a VW Polo to an old lady who wanted the clock set, and I had to drive back to the garage to get someone to do it, cos I don't understand what it means when I look at it.
I'm a lot older and not so embarrased by myself now, but it used to be a massive cause of horror to me. My mum wouldn't let me have a digital watch until I could tell the time on a normal clock, so I had to scam my way to it... eventually getting my gran to agree to buy me one for my 12th birthday, without my mum knowing.
Tricky to own a lovely time piece, when you cant tell the time on it ya see and that's what I feel I miss out on.

When you say analogue watches, do you mean all analogue watches. I mean it sounds as if you mean all, but there are different analogue watches, some have numbers and lines, some have just lines while other's have numbers as well...but never the less, your with friends and to be honest, I can't imagine how hard admiting that may have actually been.
I have three watches at present, 2 fossil watches and a ben sherman watch, I like them all, I want a new one, but cant justify buying a new one. I think the most I would spend is around £60 but some of those in the £100+ range are very tempting!
Nggggghhh I am having trouble heeding the advice given. I really want to get this watch restored properly. The more I look at it and the more I search on google etc the more I want to get it back to good working condition.
The thing that worries / exites me is that to me it does not seem to be the gold plated version that seems more common - there are no areas that I can see where the plate has worn through / worn off - and after nearly 40 years of hard use - surely gold plate wouldnt have lasted like that??? Is it real gold? There are some tiny markings on the outside edge of the watch under 6 o clock that I can not make out. Hall marks?
I've priced up some Breitling straps and even the cheapest is £170 - but I think it deserves a proper strap .. no?
There are three official Breitling dealers in Cardiff. I might pop into town next weekend and see if I can get an esimate for a service / clean up / polish etc.......
It's not going to be cheap to restore - but I figure I already have got the Seiko as a beater - it's a shame that I started off using it as a general use watch as it now has scratches on the face and the gold plate on the buttons is wearing off, instead of buying a another Tissot or whatever should I put the money into this project? It would be very special to have the Breitling for best behaviour use.....
It would be nice to get from:
to something a bit more like:

It is possible but rather odd for a watch with a solid case to have a SS back, unless at some point in its life the caseback was replaced.
The common hallmarks for gold are pretty standard for Swiss watches, but I'd need some macro shots of them to give you more info. Here are some of them,
The usual one is the St. Bernard with a letter in its ear. Then you'll have one to let you know the percentage of gold (as a measure against 24 carats). 750 is 18K gold, 583 for 14K and 375 for 9K. 9K is common in pocket watches and usually older pieces as it is harder than 18K.
Sure, you can get a very nice crocodile strap for it but in the mean time take a look at Hirsch. They make some fantastic straps that are even water-resistant and won't get all smelly after days of wear. In the long term, it might make more sense than having to keep swapping £500+ leather straps, ever so often.
