On track? maybe. Insensitive and pessimistic? Definitely.

We can only speculate the motives behind the Pixar executives decision to send somebody out with the movie, personally I'd like to believe they did it for the right reasons and even if they didn't they gave a dying little girl her last wish in the process which is as great a deed as any one of us can hope to be capable of.

There are some very insensitive comments in this thread and it has to be said I expect a little better of the members here.

Re: Pixar grants little girls dying wish

Regardless of whether Disney-Pixar have hearts or not (i am sad to say i suspect they leaned towards publicity), the guy they sent round was apparently pretty moved by it which could make all the difference for the parents.

I personally think it's a tough call for companies to do this, they're making someone very happy, but once again (as in all these sorts of situations) there are thousands of other kids who are in similar if not worse off positions and don't get anything like this.

Finally you/i/we don't know who made the decision. They haven't released any details, so we are not in a position to say whicj "executives" allowed it - in a company as large as Pixar "executive" could mean one of tens or hundreds of people.

End of the day, they made a little girl happy and it's a touching story.

Re: Pixar grants little girls dying wish

.....and if you "gentlemen" had bothered to read the article fully you would have seen this

"Pixar officials declined to comment on the story or name the employees involved."

........which is a pretty poor publicity stunt or attempt at publicity. I would suggest that the family leaked the story because they were grateful.

Go and stand in the corner and hang your heads in shame.......unless of course we are allowed to burn the witches?, can we Admins?, can we?, please

Re: Pixar grants little girls dying wish

The article makes it quite clear that they were contacted with respect to making a comment, and they declined. Had they utilised it as an opportunity to get a spokeperson out into the papers and make a big issue out of the film, and what a wonderful thing they'd done, then yes this would've been blatant advertising/PR stunt and I would have been very angry.

I think it should be applauded that they cut through the normal swathes of bureaucracy that would have prevented this ever getting beyond a call centre, and did something that benefited somebody without turning it into a media saga - it would appear though that if you are a company, you genuinely are damned if you do and damned if you don't. If this had been a bloke in a shed somewhere there would've been an outpouring of appreciation, but as soon as the word corporation is mentioned everybody jumps in with abuse for them.

Ultimately, I think it's just nice that this girl was able to get what she wanted in the last few hours of what was certainly far too short a life.

EDIT: And what Dingo has just posted is spot on.

Re: Pixar grants little girls dying wish

The best you could possibly argue is that they did it to avoid the negative publicity. They've not made a circus out of it at all.

Even in companies like this one, they have restrictive rules to follow regarding films such as this, however all you need is one compationate person, who is able to interpret the rules in the right way and you get a poor girl, a bit of happyness. That seams to be what has happened here!

Who cares if the company did it for the PR surely the important thing was that the little girl had her wish granted!

Re: Pixar grants little girls dying wish

In situations like this, I trust my instincts. The little girl and her family benefitted from Pixar's decision; had Pixar said 'no', Colby's passing would have been without something that meant so much to her.

Call me a sucker if you like; tell me I've fallen for their publicity ploy. None of it ranks above what was a distraction for her from her pain and suffering and hopefully brought her some solace in her last hours.

I understand the cynicism expressed here but instinct tells me that what happened was right for Colby, her mum and her dad. I choose to believe that it was the people at Pixar, not the Corporation, that reacted with heart because the action feels right.

I wouldn't give up on the belief that there is unconditional kindness in others.

Re: Pixar grants little girls dying wish

Lets be honest, Pixar do not need any more public favour than they already have. I whole heartidly believe that the guys at pixar wanted the girl to see the movie, and bless them for what they did

I would say that all companies are made up of people and all people can be kind.

I do think though that although there was kindness involved that there would also be commercial thought behind it too.

And I think the kindness overshadows any forethiught to this...

Nail on head......now where did you want the cheque and bogus TV award for "most lovely person ever in the history of the world" sent to?

    Aha, so it's
    Pixar Studios.com

Good job I'm not an Iranian, or I might accuse the British Government of orchestrating a revolution, against the people, for the people, and against the people............Jesus, is anyone sure that GOD was't a woman.....aside from a small minority that wants to hold on to power at all costs.....no silly, not the Labour Government, most of them are women anyway, the Mullahs are so butch they lift fifteen textbooks a day.....and the effort required to sustain an eternal lie.....is worth every penny of the American dollars that the Iranian economy receives

Smething tells me we are being short-changed in the Global economy.....but let's place bets that the American Government are not involved

Re: Pixar grants little girls dying wish

I wonder what will happen next time someone approaches Pixar (or any other company that might have read much of the cynicism).

I can imagine their response being "last time we did something like this, it got thrown back in our faces and we were accused of cynically manipulating a little girl's dying hours for publicity purposes. So, do it again? Er, no thanks".

Goodness knows, I'm cynical enough myself. But, so far, I've seen nothing to support the allegation that Pixar did this for the publicity. Perhaps the most that can be said is that they won't have objected to positive publicity, but I can't see any evidence that they sought it or or exploited it.

Unless, unbeknownst to us all, we have a Pixar insider (and probably a senior one) as a member here, none of us know what Pixar's motivations were. So it's all just speculation, and in the absence of anything to justify it, how about cutting them a little slack?

And here's a thought for the cynics :-

    - If Pixar had declined to do something, and it had got out, they'd have been accused of being a cold, heartless un-caring corporation, and ignoring this sad child in her dying hours.

    - If they do do something, they get accused of being sickbed media whores.

    They can't win.

So what's their best strategy? Well, clearly, to do something for the child, but to keep very quiet about it. And what did they do? They did something for the child and kept very quiet about it. Well, what do you know? Just occasionally, when it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's actually a duck.

So why don't all us cynics reserve our comment for those that have been proven to deserve it, like many of our political leaders, and cut Pixar, who seem to have merely done a nice thing, a bit of a break?

And the really important point has already been made several times. They cheered up a dying child's last few hours, so in the scheme of things, what does it matter why they did it? Even an arch ol' cynic like me doesn't care why they they did it.
