    Striking Royal Mail Workers.

Oh how inconvenient it is, but what really grinds my gears is the company they work for is in a real mess.

Given they are striking in the north London mail receiving place, i have absolutely no sympathy for them at all.

Feel under paid? GET ANOTHER JOB!

No one offering you a better paid job, your not worth any more money.

Its the way unions black male companies into giving them what they want, it would be horrific if all the companies in an area got together and demanded people worked longer hours or they wouldn't be paid?

Can you imagine if people at RBS decided to strike, they wouldn't allow customers access to their money unless they all got big pay rises!

Sack the lot of them. For unskilled manual labour their pay is (I think anyway) more than reasonable.

    Re: Striking Royal Mail Workers.

what is their rate of pay like then?

I saw a documentry ages ago about their casual/temp workers who would be given no training, a bag of mail & would be sent on their way, took them all da to deliver one round & I'm sure they even just posted random things through wrong doors to get rid of it!

Starting pay £256/week (£13,312), up to £311/week after one year (£16,172).

Not great, but commensurate with e.g. factory worker pay.

I work in the chemical industry our shift bods do a standard 3 shift rota, mon-fri (no weekends), you dont need qualifications to get a job, but do need to be sensible, they earn around £32,000. Overtime was standard, but now its time off. They also get a bonus, and share save (which is a big bonus here). I am a contractor so dont get the above.

Flibb, in london its not as if there is any shortage of jobs. The market pays what it has too, and no more.

The market pays the minimum to get a job done, until the customer takes action about the dire service. I work for one of the largest contarcting companys around, and we have nearly lost large contract due to paying the minimum to get qulaified staff. Around here we have one of the best postal services in country, but thats down to the level of pay and overtime being enough to get a postman a resonable disposable income or shock horror the ability (with a partner) to buy a one bedroom flat. Pay peanuts get monkeys, and an annoyed customer.

Oh come on, most people here wouldn't get out of bed for that kind of money. It is a pittance. There are others who swindle more than that in one expenses claim.

The Royal Mail people have jobs; they are not layabouts with their hands out. They have families to look after. Look, they may not be gifted with the skills and intellect to move around in the jobs market and you can't take chances when you're trying to put food on the table every week.

Sit here pontificating all you like but these are real people trying to get by. Who here would get out of bed for that pay when you know you have to sustain yourself in a World where food prices go up and up and up?

Life is hard enough without every internet-connected-my-opinion-is-always-right having a go at you. They deserve more pay and the rise is easily affordable if hand outs to the greedy are stopped.

Stop stabbing your neighbour in the back with the knife that those with too much money has given you.

    Re: Striking Royal Mail Workers.

I wouldn't say no to £16,000 a year. Fair point, I don't work in London, but it is enough to get by, whether you live in the capital or not. No more than getting by, but enough. Do they think they're much more than an adult paper-boy? They certainly don't act like it in any area I've been in recently.

Royal Mail have allowed themselves to be overtaken by countless couriers, both national and local, and post-offices in rural areas are shutting by the hour. It's a complete mess, from bottom to top, and has been for some years - you won't find any sympathy here.... and I work in the public sector (and no, I've never been on strike).

Some of us work a hell of a lot more, for a hell of a lot longer for a hell of a lot less money. I appreciate that they might feel they deserve more.... hell, who doesn't...? but we don't all just down tools for a few percent.

Yeah, pay the rent, coucil tax, water, gas, electric, fares, food etc and you're still quids in. Well, a quid in maybe. Spoil the kids and get 'em a lolly to share. There's a difference between surviving and living.

Anyone who works within the system deserves a wage to sustain them in the demands of that system or they may feel it's not worth working....

    Re: Striking Royal Mail Workers.

The big issue, isn't that the Royal Mail workers are striking, it's that they're striking AGAIN. It wasn't that long ago that we had massive disruption across the country due to rolling strikes and now they're doing it again.

It either means that a) their Union is just a bunch of strike happy idiots who aren't really looking out for their members or b) that none of the underlying issues have been solved by Royal Mail.

If it's a), then something needs to be done to the Union (and whilst they're at it, whichever one represents Underground drivers) and if it's b) then something needs to be done with the leadership of Royal Mail.

Erm, say what you want, but there is nothing stopping them doing a different job is there?

Then lets not forget there are those who are worse paid, but striking would do nothing for, lets take nusery staff. The majority of juinor staff, required for the 1 to 3 baby ratio (law) are paid less than that.

What would happen if they strike? Seeing as no employer is in a monopoly posistion in most towns, they would simply be told "we can't pay you more, xxxx pay the same, we can't charge our customers more". Striking is very artificial way of getting more money. Pay rises via strike action are in no way earnt, they are simply extorted.

As royal mail is a specail kind of monopoly, you have to find some other company to compare the workers too. I would have thought that mail sorters where relatively low skill? those wages aren't bad considering.
