    After reading this thread and similar on other forums I am thinking about getting a smallish tropical tank for my room. I am wondering how much work they actually require and whether they can be left to self sustain for periods of time such as holidays.
    From reading it appears that once the tank has cycled and chemical levels are correct the water should remain okay with partial changes once a week but can these be left for a fortnight or so ever or would that reuslt in dead fish?
    All i have had before is a couple of goldfish .

    Cheers
    Col

    It really depends a lot on the type of fish you intend on keeping, and the size of your tank.

    Generally, the smaller the tank, the more you have to monitor and maintain the water condition. The greater the number of fish, the more waste, the more work to keep things in order.

    Certain fish eat a lot, others can be left ages without food.

    Do you know of a trustworthy friend who could help monitor things when you're away?

    Otherwise, I'd go for as big a tank and you can reasonably purchase and some hardy fish.

    What Galant said - other factors to include are the number of fish you have / how often you feed them and how good your filtration is..

    you can also buy slow release food if you're going to be away for a few days etc..

    Thats a really nice setup, I been thinking about getting tropical fish to replace my bargain basement goldfish. Will be off to the petshop asap!
    Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
    Enwrought with golden and silver light,
    The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
    Of night and light and the half-light,
    I would spread the cloths under your feet:
    But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
    I have spread my dreams under your feet;
    Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.
