In this modern free spoken society,
There is a word that we still hold taboo.
A word with a terrible history,
Of being used to abuse, oppress and subdue.

    Just six seemingly harmless letters,
Arranged in this way will form a word.
With more power than the pieces of metal,
That are forged to make swords.

A couple of Gs an R and an E, an I and an N,
Just six little letters all jumbled together,
Have caused damage that we may never mend.

And it's important that we all respect,
That if these people should happen to choose,
To reclaim the word as their own,
It doesn't mean the rest of you have a right to its use.

    So never underestimate,
    The power that language imparts.
Sticks and stones may break your bones,
    But words can break hearts.

A couple of Gs-Gs, unless you've had to live it.
An R and an E, even I am careful with it.
An I and an N in the end it will only offend,
Don't want to have to spell it out again.

Only a ginger, can call another ginger Ginger.

I don't think anyone has said gingers are ugly. The jist of the joke (and it's sad that this needs explained) is that gingers are sometimes perceived as being ostracised for being a redhead (consider the saying 'bastard redheaded stepchild'). It's a popular witticism. It boggles the mind that some people don't get this. Hence leading to my comment "She doesn't get it because she's ging", continuing with the joke that redheads are social outcasts. Nobody is saying this is reality, or that redheads are all ugly and socially inept.

For people who still don't get it, here is the definition of a 'joke':
    * a humorous anecdote or remark intended to provoke laughter; "he told a very funny joke"; "he knows a million gags"; "thanks for the laugh"; "he ...
    * jest: activity characterized by good humor
    * tell a joke; speak humorously; "He often jokes even when he appears serious"
    * antic: a ludicrous or grotesque act done for fun and amusement
    * act in a funny or teasing way
    * a triviality not to be taken seriously; "I regarded his campaign for mayor as a joke"
P.S. Thanks for spoiling the gag.

Re: Gingers - Are they really a lower form of life?

Gingers get annoyed when people make fun of them.
Fat people get annoyed when people make fun of them.
Bald people get annoyed when people make fun of them.
Women get annoyed when people make fun of them.
Stupid people get annoyed when people make fun of them.
Smart people get annoyed when people make fun of them.

People need to lighten up and take a joke about themselves. If you can't make fun of yourself then you are going to lead a miserable insecure life .

Re: Gingers - Are they really a lower form of life?

Two seperate issues really; firstly the christmas cards. Well I'm ginger and I found them a funny joke No different to many many MANY other off colour jokes like the traditional "Englishman, Irishman and a Scotsman..."

Second issue is that yes, some people do get some serious crap off others being ginger. Me I dealt with it by realising that basically some people are dicks, and would pick on you for just about any reason they can concieve. Best just to ignore them/kick them in the nuts/plan insane serial killer revenge plots

Re: Gingers - Are they really a lower form of life?

its been said and people need to take notice and not just pass over it. Everyone at some point in their life will have the mick taken out of them because of whatever it is that makes them different. There are many many things in life which will make one things stand out from another, its what makes us who we are, its what makes us all individuals, a lot of the time these comments might also forge who we are be it for the better or worse.

I was bullied at school aswell but that wasnt because of my hair, because i was fat or because i was stupid... it was just because i was damned unlucky.

Putting a protective blanket over anything which might stand a slight chance at insulting someone isnt going to help anyone at all. Man up and get over it.

Re: Gingers - Are they really a lower form of life?

I'm honestly bemused by this term 'gingerism'. As said throughout this thread, bullying exists, it always will, it's one of those sad facts of life. I got bullied, so did pretty much everyone I know, it happens, get over it.

If we continue to 'censor' potentially offensive material, humour as we know it will cease to exist.

now, let's all make love, not war.

Re: Gingers - Are they really a lower form of life?

I don't even think it's "bullying", it's just a standard-issue British joke. Along with a whole load of other things, like thieving scousers, Essex girls, public schoolboys, IT nerds.

The only reason it's been said in the first place is to get a laugh, but then someone always decides to turn it into an issue. Usually because they think it reflects badly on them, i.e. MP for Liverpool coming out and saying that the old hubcaps routine is hurting their tourism industry, but often I think it's because people feel the need to be "offended". I have to admit, I'm not sure I know what "offended" means.

Hurt and upset I understand, abused I get, but "offended" seems to mean that you're assuming someone might become upset in the future, and so you're taking issue with it yourself. Never mind that neither you nor this hypothetical person are actually bothered about it, it's all about making an issue out of it in advance. And then selling your story to all the papers, no doubt.

As for kids finding it upsetting, and it being impossible to explain to them, how about explaining that it's a joke? Or do we not tell kids jokes anymore?
