    Firefox now defaults to Bing...

    Anyone else with this problem?

    http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...mment-20507118

I have it, but it isn't showing up in any of the folders stated and i can't find head nor tail of it, about:config tallys up to what i set it to, but still the address bar insists on searching the pile of **** that is Bing...

I don't have any toolbars installed in anything, nor can i find anything malaligned that could be causing it:

Unless of-course it is one of the windows live essential things, although i explicitly told it to only install WLM...

    Any ideas?

    Reg entries to destroy?

    It's really starting to grate.......

Vague memories of firefox, somewhere in the options you could set the default search engine from google, yahoo or something. Checked that?

    It's 4.98*

Yep, about:config is fine, it's still showing as being set as google.co.uk

You haven't just updated or installed anything from Live Essentials have you? Right at the end of the install process it does ask if you would like MS to be your default search engine. From memory this will edit the search in your default browser. Might be worth deleting the FF profile and starting from scratch with it if you can not force the default search criteria.

Not that i know of, the only thing that i have changed recently is adding HDDs, that is it, no new programs, zip.

Windows update is set to auto, it just so happens in this case it has turned round and slapped me in the face for doing so...

And deleting the profile makes things hard, as i don't know a large amount of my passwords , and CBA going through recovery for every single one...

Plus i need the history to do reconnaissance on past things i think of now and again.

Plus, i shouldn't have to clean up after miscroshaft, after they **** about with things that they're not supposed to...

You could try going to manage search engines and deleting the bing entry, or going to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ and selecting a search plugin you do want as a default, click to install it and check the default search option and that should sort it. Did for me when I stupidly forgot to untick an Ask.com option in some burning software.

Delete your google search plugin and then go to the mycroft site above. Add google again and then click the tick box as shown below This will set it as the default again and should force it. Ignore that I am using bing in this, just grabbed what was on the front page. Click the "Start using it right away" as this acts as a set to default

Already tried, , tried resetting to default and everything

I wonder if setting default to Bing and then back would change it?

    edit: nope

So Firefox will allow any old installer to just add and enable add-ons silently? I mean, bad show Microsoft, but you're seriously telling me I can write a Firefox add-on, make it install silently and then make it uninstallable?

When running as a local admin yes, yes you can and *should*.

Even if they cryptographically signed everything, you could just strip that out, and patch it to your hearts content. Thou the signing might not be a bad idea at limiting attack vectors somewhat.

I think the issue here is was the bar installed, was this just a mistake because someone updated a core lib and changes prophegated out, if so, why was it so badly integrated into the burnt ferrit so that the users couldn't simply override it.

Some of the complaints about MS manipulating another program are a little erm lack luster. At the end of the day the OS is a platform, so pushing out support for Silverlight or Click Once is to be expected as MS need to ensure homogenisation on their platform. However failing to basically respect the application been extended is not acceptable behaviour.

Neither is pushing an app bar on people who've never had it installed, if it has been installed once and removed improperly then I can completely understanding the updater "fixing" this thou.

I can understand being able to silently install add-ons - I just thought that perhaps Firefox could detect add-ons added since it was last open and just give the user a "These add-ons have been installed - you OK with that?" type dialog (I assume it has some kind of "Are you sure you want to install this?" dialog if you install add-ons while FF is open). Presumably since this was an MS update it installed while Firefox was closed and FF simply accepted them once it re-opened...?

But I quite agree with this largely being Microsoft's bad for not respecting FF - I just wonder if FF couldn't do more to avoid this kind of situation...

Re: Firefox now defaults to Bing...

Out of interest, what's so bad about Bing? I've been using it regularly, alongside the big G, and have been quite impressed with the quality of the results, especially in image searches.
