OK thinking about it, there has been one thread I recall which got out of hand and took things too far.
@Cat Umm, I'm offended *thinks I should be, but have no idea*
Agent has already said it was not just, or even, about that thread.
If anyone resorts to insults in debate it is because, imho, they have become frustrated in their own inability to articulate their views or because they cannot accept that someone might hold a different view to their own.
Insults are the first indication of the demise of their argument, even if it has validity. So if you can't debate your way through a difference of opinion in adult fashion, it is better you don't try.
But anyway - it doesn't matter what has happened in the past. It's all just tattle-tale gossiping.
This is about the future of the community of the boards and we're not singling out anything recently, this is something that has been going on for a few years now.
Jon Richardson said it best tbh.
To keep a forum running smoothly and with little to no nastiness there can be only one solution - ban political discussion.
Every forum I go on is all smiles and loveliness, up until a thread about politics erupts, an old gaming forum i used to frequent was ripped apart at the seams by one extremely nasty thread that dragged on for weeks. Some of the guys i chat to still wont speak to some of the other guys from there because of it. Although it is usually the Americans who take it far more seriously than us Brits.

That is certainly one way. The other (used on HEXUS) is to trust the majority of the membership to conduct debate/discussion in the spirit of debate - and avoid personal attacks. Trying to acknowledge someone else's point of view (even if it isn't one's own) helps.
And the vast majority of HEXUS do that - but occasionally things do overheat and it is the moderation and admin team's call as to when that happens. The aim is to generate and maintain an environment when any opinion can be voiced without fear of being personally flamed, although the opinion might be disagreed with. (There are some exceptions, where opinions/ comments may be unlawful, spamming and one or two others, described in the FAQ and forum guidelines)
As madduckuk said earlier, the forums would be pretty dull without some lively discussion.
And as for contentious issues, add religion and Iphone/Android!

this is a great forum and the mods work hard to keep it that way.so as members we are responsible for keeping it as friendly and enjoyable for everyone that visits or is a active member.
open discussion and opposite opinions is what make us all great human beings, lets not spoil it
for the sake of something petty

Well, despite warnings in other threads, time and again, and this one, it seems the insulting remarks have continued.
So, I've started suspending people when it happens.
I have my first victim, and I'm looking for number 2. Be warned, and don't be it.
I've had more reports of some people just not letting things lie.
Next time someone isn't man enough to walk away from an insulting argument and REPORT THE POST then there will be suspensions. Please if you are a spectator to an argument flaring up that is getting personal, report the posts and we will review.
We are suspending first and asking questions later.
Read and re-read what you're going to post to see if it could be misconstrued then you won't get caught out.
You've been warned time and time again.
