Flixonase is the newer one, but I've never noticed much difference between this and the older Beconase (or generic equivalent...).
I use the beconase generics in conjunction with eye drops but don't really have any problems as long as I remember to take it.
And of course nasal sprays generally work out much cheaper than tablets (~£5 for a spray that lasts about a month versus the same for a weeks worth of tablets)

Beconase nasal spray for me. Boots own brand does the job just as well and is cheaper. I think they're basically the same (steroid based ones anyway).

That, together with eye drops 4 times a day to stop the stinging. I used to get Opticrom but I don't see them anymore and again I think Boots own stuff is pretty much the same (sodium cromoglycate).

If you really suffer from irritated eyes it's worth trying eye baths too. Just watch you dont hit your head off the taps. Ithangyaw.....

This year was the first year that I had the desensitisation injections. Took ages to arrange and had to go a hospital 30 miles away, but it seems to be worth it. 3 injections, 1 each week over a period of 3 weeks and its supposed to densensitise you hayfever reaction. The results have been very impressive so far - my symptoms are significantly milder than they usually are for this time of year.

Next year I'm going for the conventional course of 12 weeks of once a week injections, where they inject you with the allergen, and gradually build the dose over the 12 week period.

I suffered from terrible hay fever, it completely knackered me. I used to play a lot of golf and sometimes in the height of summer I'd have to walk off mid-round purely due to hay fever. I'd feel really weak and start shaking and sweating and my nose used to bleed constantly.

I tried various tablets and eye drops and they helped but never really enough. As soon as I started using a nose spray I was 10 times better. As other folks have said, it does give you a pretty nasty taste in the back of your throat but you soon get used to it.

The problem is most folk don't start taking anything until their eyes are burning and they're sneezing like mad. My doc told me to start taking all my stuff in early spring so that I had a level of protection in my system and it's been good advice.

My girlfriend has always suffered from pretty bad hay fever too and this is the first year she's taken a nasal spray for it and she's totally fine. Well, hay fever wise anyway...
Cheers for that advice, gonna get some nasal spray weekend then.

Hopefully stop my nose bleeds bloody pain in the arse.

    Hope it helps !

The nose bleeds were a total pain in the backside. Mine would just come on suddenly with no warning. The nose bleeds that is, not pains in my backside. Think I'd need some different medication for that

I'm resurrecting this thread because my hay fever is a sodding nightmare

The runny /blocked nose is the worst bit, when you blow nothing comes out

Do these nasal sprays like Flixonase work well then? Are they available over the counter?

I think my 2007 hay fever has just started this morning. Now I feel absolutely exhausted, itchy eyes and a runny nose.

I'm wheeling out the Clarityn tablets...

Every year since I moved down here I seem to have been getting better. I went back to visit Wales for Easter and was far worse than I have been anywhere else this year.

I don't seem to need them anymore, but when I did have Hayfever badly I found Telfast was the most effective. It's by prescription only afaik. It seemed to work well, and I had no side effects at all, not even drowsyness.

I tried Zirtec once for 4 days, then stopped when my nose started to bleed! I rarely get nosebleeds from hitting my nose, so tablets causing it is pretty scary!

A friend of mine just got back from holiday where apparently he had a heart attack (at 23!) caused by taking 1 too many Clarytin because he forgot he'd taken one earlier! His blood vessels contracted too much and stopped his heart
