Have a shower / bath, get in your dressing gown and get comfy to a movie with a cuppa hot chocolate

    LMFAO

I generally just have a nice shower, get into some comfy clothes and settle down to watch whatever movie is on TV at the time. If nothing is on then a DVD

An empty, quiet room, a cup of tea with lots of milk and sugar, favourite section of the paper/good book/magazine. Playing musical instruments is God, if available, nothing quite like it for winding down.

Another more more boyish thing is sniping from a well concealed spot in Battlefield 1942, popping the heads off the little figures in the distance and knowing you've given them 30seconds of stress and there's nothing they can do

The important thing for you to do is to split up your time. Look at it like a job - allocate 9 til 6 to work and then have your evenings free for whatever you want to do. You'll actually get more done this way than just trying to work your guts out, because this way you can think "I've done 8 hours solid today - now it's my time" rather than "I can't relax because I have too much work to do, but I can't concentrate cause I've got too much to do" - which ends up in a circle that'll drive you mad. I saw many people drop out of university because of this.

Shared houses are always a pain - I wouldn't go back to one now. Normally it's a good idea to get out when someone starts sticking post it notes on food, or leaving notes telling people to clean things on the fridge. Best way to avoid rows is to work out whats important and learn to not care about the rest (so someone nicked some bread off you - why worry? it's only bread...). And never try to sort out anybody elses problem - leave them to do it.

Just my 2p worth that cost me a whole lot more
Ive gone back home for my final year at uni.... i havent lived at home for two years. So it isnt flatmates who are a problem - they never were i loved living in halls.... ITS PARENTS, THEIR DRIVING ME MAD!! Ive been home for 2 weeks now and its getting easier, but my dad can be one of the nastiest, pettyest, most obnoxious people who you could ever wish to meet. And he also has a terrible way with words And ive kinda forgotten what hes like to live with, so when my mum asked me to move back home to save some cash - like a complete dickhead that iam, i said yes . Im constantly walking round on eggshells, always waiting for an argument to happen, always on the defensive.... Ive got work to do, ive got a placement to pass (which is already stressful, cos its ITU) and ive got a boyfriend who lives 85 miles away across the irish sea..... there isnt enough hours in the day for me to do the stuff i need to do, let alone relax

I cant remember the last time I made a point of trying to relax : o
If i do sit down with a book for five minutes, i find myself feeling guilty about it and cant concentrate on what im reading.
    why exactly?

Eek, well I know you aren't trying to feel guilty, so its not going to be easy convinving yourself not to! Feel guilty when you miss the deadline not because you arent currently doing it. Wander off somewhere away from your work, or alternatively stick your work in the post addressed to yourself

    Ah

In that case - theres no advice I can give you - just offer you good luck and hope you get out of there asap. I still love my parents - I just can't stand being in the same room as them for over an hour...
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

I have similar problems having returned to live at home after University. My father and I are rarely on speaking terms. I relax by doing overtime.

Why is it that other peoples parents are always nicer than your own, and yet your grandparents are nicer than anyone elses?

    I relax in two ways.

Spiritually by practicing my Iaido Kata.

Mentally and physically by listening to music.

    Thats about it!

Nightshifts. Seriously, I sleep all day (although my father can normally find some noisy diy task), and am at work during the evening when they are both home.

OK, thats a bit extreme, but think about the times that most of the conflicts occur, (over dinner perhaps?) and be somewhere else at that time (eat out!).

Setup your room as your personal refuge, with everything you need (beer!) so that you don't have to interact with anyone if you don't want to.

Also, have a plan for the future. Plan a week off or a holiday in a couple of months time and treat yourself. Having something to look forward to always makes things easier to cope with.

Most important, have somewhere you can get away to, preferably far removed from the rest of your life.
