Premium? Somewhat depends on which bits of the horse. For those that still eat shop burgers, I won't speculate on just how much some bits might be lacking in anything resembling 'premium', but I can think of a few bits less than premium.

Same applies to the beef people might expect to get. Which bits of 'beef'?

For anyone tempted to offer suggestions, please don't. Let those that like their burgers continue in blissful ignorance of what can happen.

You could always hide the horse burger with some mascapone!

(shamelessly stolen from a mate in FB)

You might be on to something there, maybe tesco will give your independant chain of up market burger places funding. Just don't let the Guardian readers find out.

Thou there are rules about how much meat these things can contain aren't there? There is the fact that you can make something which looks like a sausage, label it a banger, and it can have virtually no meat in it!

From what I've seen, if I do that, the extent of control I end up with will probably be choosing which way to push the broom .... left to right, or right to left.

I think I'll pass on supermarket financing, thanks,

    Re: Tesco Horsemeat Burgers ??

Have to agree with shaithis, what do you expect? We all know value burgers are at best made of dubious parts of cow, what's wrong with dubious parts of horses?

I suppose the issue is that if this was only just noticed, what other dodgy practices have been going on?

Also it's quite comforting to know that spending extra on proper burgers is actually worth it. Of course I already knew that based on taste but..

OTOH I quite enjoyed by Tesco Value sausage and onion plait I had the other day. Hardly gourmet eating but perfectly pleasant.

Not sure what you've seen cats eating, but it definitely wasn't mice. They go down in one gulp, after a quick crush of the head.

Also, the rest of your plan only applies to cats that don't get enough regular exercise. Didn't see our cat play with a mouse once when we lived in the Yorkshire Dales - pounce, crunch, gulp; that was your lot.

Rabbits, on the other hand ... *shudder*

    Re: Tesco Horsemeat Burgers ??

I find it interesting that tesco is the one that seems to be getting all the flack, iceland, aldi and lidl seem to be being ignored.

Any know what % of meat a burger must be?

@Saracen, here's one for your home made burgers, try adding some oats, I add about a handful per 4 burgers

Birds.... My parents cat is virtually ferral, outside as soon as its dawn, then stays out till around about midnight when it gets cold.

If she happens upon a bird I think she enjoys smearing the entrails everywhere.

    Re: Tesco Horsemeat Burgers ??

As much as people may or may not care about different animals being minced together, as pointed out earlier, you're missing the point - it throws into question the entire supply chain which is supposed to be strict and traceable back to individual animals. Hopefully it's just a case of some idiot confusing the two species after they were already passed for human consumption, not some potentially contaminated/diseased black market meat found its way into a reputable supply chain somehow.
