Ok, just to clear up a few misconception here...

ALL food stuff have calories... everything, ok?

Some foods have a lot more calories than others, eg lettuce is very low in calories, whereas lard is very high in calories. At the same time, sweetcorn is very high in calories, as are potatoes.

The difference is the form the calories come in. Carbohydrates (potatoes, pasta, rice) are sources of calories which are broken and used by the body for energy rather than being stored within the body as fats would be.

HOWEVER... an excess of carbohydrates would result in weight gain as what the body doesn't immediately use, it stores.

Calorie counting is NOT an effective way to diet. You could maintain your reccomended calorie intake by just eating a few Mars Bars each day. In about 4 weeks you'd have scurvy, constipation, respiratory problems and be nicely into the first stages of malnutrition.

The only way to lose weight AND keep it off is to eat a BALANCED diet. Nothing is 'off limits', you can eat whatever you want but in MODERATION.

So if you have a Mars Bar, just be aware of it and try and avoid too many sweet snacks for the next few days.

Next up is to go through your fridge and get rid of cream, butter, full fat cheeses, full cream milk etc etc. Switch to vegetable oil based spreads, use semi skimmed milk etc etc.

Sugar isn't as much of a problem as people think, it has roughly 15 calories per tsp compared to fats or oils having 50 calories per tsp. So you can still have sugar in your tea if you can't stand sweeteners.

The idea is to not make life unbearable with some super dooper diet regime.... if it's too much of a pain then you won't follow it and then you'll feel guilty for 'cheating'...

The key to healthy eating is to make a few minor lifestyle changes, identify where you regularly divert from eating properly and work to change that habit.

Safe weight loss, which will then also stay off, should be around 2lb for the first week dropping to 1lb after that. Any more than this and you aren't reducing your weight sensibly, you're just depriving your body of what it needs... as soon as you eat anything the body will store it and the weight will go back on. however, a gradual weight loss is acheivable and sustainable.

Now, in conjunction with eating properly, you have to drink AT LEAST 8 glasses of water a day... that's on top of anything else you drink. This not only has the two-fold effect of making you feel full and keeping you properly hydrated, but also it aids with flushing your body through to give a more efficient digestive system and remove imputrities.

Lastly, you HAVE to excercise. This doesn't mean blasting off to the gym every night, or jogging round the block every morning. Many peopel start off with too much too fast, realise it's damn hard work and give up.

Start with walking briskly... you got somewhere to go? Go there quickly.. walk fast enough to just get you little out of breath. Run up the stairs.. every set of stairs you come to. Take the stairs instead of the lift.. walk to the pub... it doesn't matter what excercise it is, as long as you do more of it!

    Hope this helps!

I think the most important thing is finding something to do!

If your reducing your food intake, you're likely to be hungry more often, so finding something that will take your mind off it is very important. Myself, I do some overtime, but going shopping more often would probably work!

Alright in theory, but have you actually tried running or cycling much at this time of year? And the ones running on the street are going to have bad knee joints in a couple of years.

Yes, but I'm paid to. Actually, it's not too bad, the cold air gets to my throat a bit, but it's better than running in the middle of the summer.
