Get out jogging, if you find it tough just run one or two miles a couple of times each week. Don't overstretch yourself - enjoy it. Build your distance up over time, treat it as a hobby.

About your food. If you like your burgers just show a little more restraint when thinking about going back for 2nds. Try and cut down on your excessive foods. Good luck.

Thanks for your advice guys I started cutting down my food from this evening, also decided to walk more regularly. I probably have to lose at least 15-20kg which isn't an easy task but I'll do my best. I just saw my old picture and OMG I'm completely different person there I feel so ashamed of myself now. I really want to have that slim body back... so I'll work hard.

Jan 2006 I went walking with the Ramblers on both sat and sun for about 4 weeks - walks varied between 6 and 11 miles.
I lost a lot of weight.
I read that walking burns more fat than running, which might explain why I lose my appetite on a long walk - so I get exercise and don't put any fuel in.
I've done one 7 mile walk so far this year and really hope I can keep going by doing further walks.
Luckily I also do about 40 mins walking - home-station-work - on weekdays and this probably keeps me ticking over - when I go out with the ramblers, I really reap the fitness benefits.

I think running's about the best exercise there is (others say swimming/cycling etc.) but it's not for everyone.

Really there's no mystery - unless you've got some kind of medical condition - it's just a simple case of eating less (or more healthily) and exercising more. The main key to it is wanting to do it, if the willpower's engaged you'll do it.

One tip is to keep imagining what you want your body image to be like as and when you're exercising. That definitely helps. Good luck anyway, stick with it, it's worth the effort/pain.

I've got a bit of a belly to get rid of... which I don't like.

So. today I've started on the veg. 3 sticks of celery, a few garlic stuffed olives, grapes, strawberries and a ham sandwich.

Will take up running once it's not so dark when I get in, and will be signing up to the swimming pool by my station soon. Also will start borrowing my 'rents dog at the weekends. Nothing like a nutty GSD to keep you company on a long walk. I will also go clubbing a bit more, with less alcohol. I'm sure that's the reason i was a skinny runt when i was younger!

Just a note on the low-carb - I do agree that if you eat red meat and fatty foods everyday, this would be bad for you. You still have to eat sensibly and get all your carbs from your veg, salad, fruit etc..

Let's take typical selection from my menu:-

    breakfast:-
scrambled eggs OR nut bar OR low-carb breakfast bar.

    Lunch:-
Green salad with Tuna OR chicken/meat - small amount of mayo with the tuna.

    Dinner:-
Selection of steamed veggies (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower etc.) with either a portion of lean meat OR fish OR chicken.

(I am also partial to a curry – home made from lean meat, natural yoghurt, tomatoes, spices etc.) no rice, no nan, no extras except for the veggies that go into the curry.

    Snack:-
    Fresh strawberries or raspberries

You will not that there is hardly any fat in the above selection – people have been watching too much TV I think!!!

If you think low-carb is all about eating fatty foods & red meat; your totally wrong!!! The low-carb diet has been around for centuries and it doesn’t have any health implications if done correctly.

We all know the BEST option is to eat sensibly mixing your food stuffs and do plenty of exercise (ok, this is where I struggle). But as we all know - this is not easy to maintain.

I generally do low-carb for a month, have a few days off taking in a variety of food types, then back on again for another month.

I did really well on the Eat Right For Your Type (Blood group based) eating plan. I still follow it fairly closely but I was amazed at how much better I felt. I started it years ago and it definitely made a difference.

Some people have said it's based on bad science but based on experience, it worked for me. (I'm an O so I get lots of meat!)

Walking across country burns about 100 calories a mile. Don't ask me where I saw that though, I'll try and find a link later.

80% of weight loss is diet. THE most important thing to eat is a balanced diet.

One good guide is to say for a meal - eg main meal of the day, you should have a hand size of veg(imagine placing your hand on a plate as if you were going to trace round it), the meat/fish should be no more than a fist size and the fat should be about 2 peanut sizes.

Also a good rule of thumb is that if any item on the plate is touching another, you should cut down the portion size.
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

Walking is definitely a good way to burn calories but the old story that it burns more than jogging is a bit of a myth I'm afraid. The old TV ad about walking was a bit misleading. If you walk or run the same distance you'll burn roughly the same, but if you run and walk for the same duration you'll burn twice as many cals running.

Hiking is a good middle ground, and it also helps to build muscle. You'll probably get better views on the hike too

I've lost a decent bit of weight lately just watching what I'm eating. I've been trying the "small meals more often" kinda idea and it's working well for me. Also a set of body fat measuring scales were a good investment, they've shamed some pounds off.

Can't take too much credit for the weight loss though. My missus being a dietician and telling me what to eat and when helps a wee bit

My other half lost 9.5 stone with Slimming World ! Her was a big lass at 21 st, but they gave her a LOT of help and support, even down to phone calls and visits when she was low and feeling the need to feed.

But even with that, you need the willpower to see it through, or you will fail.

I recently went up to 16 st, but have now dropped that back down to 14.5 st, just by cutting out a lot of volume booze (beer/cider), chips and other fried stuff, and generally eating more fresh fruit and veg. No processed food either. Took me 2 months.
    Cheers, David

I've lost a lot of weight recently, probably about a stone and a half - and I wasn't overweight before. However, this was due to a coma which isn't really a great weightloss plan.

Pfft! Suggest it to the Hollywood crowd. If they're dumb enough to inject botulism toxin into their face, they'll probably give artificially induced comas a go!
