It's ridiculous. They've cancelled the crowds for the live show tonight in case she is lynched.

The scenes in India of the burning of an effigy of the Big Bro team are far more racist, intentional and frankly disturbing than any of Goodys' actions. She's just an idiot who shouldn't be given any more air time. People are really over-reacting.

There must be more to this than meets the eye.

Yeah.... I can see the BB program people sitting in a room now

person a: "ratings are terrible, what can we do?"
person b: "well the 'celebrities' we have are terrible, we need to get attention some other way"
person a: "how about we pay Jade a sum of money to kick off in a mildly racist way and edit it so that noone sees her in the diary room discussing this"
person b: "yeah the sun will lap that up"

    Possible? I think so

Hmm what was with the wearing of the ear-muffs as well ?

I reckon there was an ear-piece inside this with BB feeding information and what to say to defuse the situation.

A lot of people have been pick up on this comment, and are greatly offended by it. I do understand how first and second generation immigrants are offended by it and it is racist when it is directed to them. But is the use of the phrase, if it is directed to a non-resident of a country, make it racist?

Would it be racist if applied to an asylum-seeker who's just arrived here?

No they haven't. Because complaints have been made to the police it's potentially a criminal matter now, and Channel 4/Endemol/Davina would be acting negligently if they caused Jade to speak in public before she had the chance to take legal advice. Also by broadcasting any of it they would risk prejudicing legal proceedings later.

Protecting those who freely express opinions....ensuring fair trials....political correctness gone mad, is it?

I'm sure that showing Jade getting lynched by an angry mob would have guaranteed them huge ratings though

The phrase is not a particularly nice thing to say in general, but it might not be racist in all situations. For example would it be if it was one Iraqi, who was resident here, saying it to another Iraqi who was attempting to claim asylum?

They would be unlikely to say that though wouldn't they? Unless they are from opposing sects. In which case it would be racist. I can't tell the difference between English and French - after all you all look the same, don't you? - so you regard them as your brothers? How about hutus and tutsis? If you believe Hotel Rwanda, there is no physical difference at all between and the distinction is a legacy class system estabished by the dutch to ease their administration. So in the absence of tangible racial difference, was the genocide not a form of racism? Of course it was.

The problem with all this hypothesising is that there is not a logically consistent basis for racism, you have to interpret each incident individually. An incident is legally racist if the victim or anyone witnessing it interprets it as such, and of course ~40,000 people have complained already

Sorry I hypothesis and play devil's advocate too much, and sometimes things get a bit too convoluted.

That legal point about witnessing an incident is interesting. I shall have to tell people not to call me Paddy in case they offend someone else.

Racism is people been abused BECAUSE they are from another race.

What's happing in Big Brother is normal bullying, the person just happens to be from another race, I really feel its based in class differences and there was no intent for raciest abuse. In the heat of the moment you often pick up on peoples most obvious differences, which is what happened here. In all cases of accused racism not enough attention is paid to the true motive. Don't forget the because.

The biggest issue here is people starting to slander Channel Four, why? I'm not really sure of there reasons as they are so totally illogical. The whole point of Big Brother is to show us what the people in the house are like in that situation, Channel four has done something controversial but ultimately good. As we may never see Jade Goody on TV again, at least not after the million interviews or should I say accusations, she will undertake.
