My new TFT beats my current 17" LG Flatron for colour, viewability, I get no ghosting on anything, I'm not limited to 1 Fixed Graphics mode with my TFT unlike some, I get 4 mode, 1 for each of the sensible resolutions.

Cheaper yes, as I've already said, but I can tell the difference already, and I think its well worth the money.

Still very interesting to get peoples views.

it's just that the one's i've seen arn't that good for sub £250. the ilyama's and such are good but at £300-400 a little to much for a 17", 16" viewable monitor - don;t quote me on size!

ghosting, bad shading are common in the one's i';ve seen.

you do tend to gets what you pay for, and there isn't really a decent 17" LCD for under £325, sadly...but then they are only just short of a 19" CRT viewable area...

    Yes, he is lol

I've got a fairly old Nokia 446XS 19" crt here, I'm looking at replacing it with dual tft goodness once I get the cash together, but I really want a tft with 1600*1200 resolution, so currently that restricts me to 21" tft, which is fookin expensive lol

I tried using a TFT at uni in the library and some of the lab machines came with them and tbh i prefer the good old CRT, ok they look sexier, take up less space and are waaaay cooler but i think for the majority of people there is no need for them to make the change to TFT.

I also intend to go back to a dual CRT system \o/ I had a dual system at university and it was excellent, the fiancee wanted to know why 2 screens were better than one until i showed her copying and pasting from excel to word across the screens and watching a DVD whilst writing an essay.

I've got a Samsung 181T and I paid £700 for it when the model first hit the shelves. People say that even today's TFT prices are way too high but from my perspective I would say that it's the best single computer purchase I've ever made, even at the stupid price I paid.

I mainly use mine for browsing the internet and serious stuff like Office and Matlab. I occassionally play the odd game and I have no problems with it. I never watch any DVDs on it since I've got a decent TV. So, for my needs it's perfect since using the DVI connection the image is a lot sharper compared to a CRT monitor and I like that.

There's also the design of them. I've never once seen a member of the opposite sex walk into my room and say "Oooh, that's a nice CRT monitor". There's a reason for that - they're all ugly, without exception. People spend lots of money buying nice cases for their computers and modding them, why not buy a monitor that looks nice to go with it?

The problem is that my graphics card has dual DVI. It's seems a shame to waste that second DVI port. I've been so tempted to buy a second monitor, especially since the 181T has a wonderfully thin bezel which would make it perfect for dual screen use. Luckily I've managed to resist so far.

Used to run both a Samsung 191T and Mitsubishi 22" flat screen beast!

Those were the days, just the flat screen now!

I bought a 15" TFT when they were not quite bleeding edge, but it cost me a third of my computer budget two years ago. Since I move every two months thanks to uni I wouldn't have been able to cope with a 17" CRT.

And I've since converted two CRT users due to the Iiyama's amazing image quality. Dark colours are a bit off but it's a small sacrifice to have this on my (small) desk

I got a CRT for christmas and i'm very happy with it. It outputs a good quality picture and a nice high res.

I don't see ANY point in getting a TFT other then space saving, waste of money in my opinon. Total waste of money.

Heh I'm even more convinced since last night that TFT is the only way forward, The sharpness of the images is so much better, Playing Warcraft 3 last night with the new monitor was SOOOOOOOOO much nicer than on my CRT.

And as for price i'm not so convinced on that front either, (Going from Scan's prices) a decent 19" Flat screen CRT costs £200 ex vat and del, a decent 17" TFT costs a tad over £300 to £350, we're talking not a great deal of difference here.

And those of you that can't see the point, I wonder if you've had the opportunity to use a new generation TFT screen?.

Speaking from experience or just close mindedness?

    Ah also DVI rocks

    I have desk space now
I don't get a hernia when i want to dust!
I no longer get headaches when i'm working

just a shame I can't get a video casrd with dual dvi
I used to get headaches with CRT's ... about 4 years ago !!!

... but now I've been using CRT's that support > 100Hz refresh and therefore NO HEADACHES - anyone who gets headaches from their CRT should either increase the refresh or, if this isn't possible, buy a better one (or buy an LCD o'course).

I'd love to upgrade to LCD, but there isn't one out good enough - I want 20" + and absolutely no ghosting - and I mean NO GHOSTING - no really, when I mean NO GHOSTING I mean NO GHOSTING!!!

I have used a couple of high-quality LCD's (Hitachi 16ms 17" and DELL 18") and whilst they do look good for desktop work, they still suffer in games.

But as TiG said ... they are future, most definitely - I'll get one as soon as they build one good nuff

    p.s. did I mention I don't want any Ghosting ?

I'd imagine it would be near perfect with a game like Warcraft 3, which isn't particularly fast moving ... one of the things that immediately impressed me with top end LCD's is the contrast - it's difficult to match with CRT's owing to the way CRT's function, however, the new Iiyamas do have a high contrast mode that goes some way to matching the contrast (but at a slight cost of image quality) of LCDs and works especially well in games and for DVD's.

DVI is the way forward also - vastly superior to the old analogue std. I also like the perfect geometry of LCD's (which is obvious when you think about the way they function) - it's quite a refreshing change being able to (actually) just plug n' play without having to fiddle around with messy OSD's for >5 mins.
