I'm sure the overclocked versions from 3rd parties will have 2-slot coolers.

yes absolutely, what this is saying is that the card has a low enough TDP to allow for a single slotter. which means:
1. putting a 2 slotter on will be an "upgrade" to the cooling rather than a necessity - great for overclockers
2. the SFF crowd and other peeps who dont have 2 slots going for a gfx card can get one.

All I know, there is still a lot of people having overheating problems in their systems,
And a lot of that can be put down to the graphics cards.
Plus, wouldn't a 2 slot card give you more scope for a better fan? (wider flights)
30KG for a bit of air ducting on a graphics card! Am I missing something?
OK, get one if you want,............

but don't come crying to me when you get bsod ;o)
I switched from a lawnmower noisy stock x1800xt dual slot exhausting cooler to a accelero x2 that exhausts onto the mobo. Poor design really but this has not affected cpu/chipset/pwmic temps but then I do have adequate case ventilation
I doubt the 8800gt will be as hot and I'm sure there will be 3rd party coolers that will fit this card and exhaust out the case.

ok,ok. I got to be honest, I've never had a twin slot graphics card, but I was looking forward to getting one.
And then the 8800gt shows up! now I want this card. but.......
Just look at this pic... Google Image Result for http://news.ferra.ru/images/189/189755.jpg
It look to me like the warm air is pushed out underneath the front & back of the card, right back into the suction of the fan again, that can't be good!
To me the twin slot card (heat out of the back) looked to be a better idea.
Maybe in realty there not as effective as I thought?
Anybody out there with a 2 slot cooler like to answer that?
(can't count noise, that could happen to any fan)

hot air can also be projected - which is what happens when the only way out of a cooler is through the vents.. most PSU's (all?) vent air out of the back and not the top, the same thing works very well with graphics cards.
anyway, null and void cause this card only creates enough heat to need a single slot solution

Exactly! thats the key, project it outside the case.
Now if all the motherboard manufactures would kindly move your pci-e slots to the bottom of the boards like so..............
Not only would we have more room for our hard drives but I could implement my "projected air graphics mod" like so.............
