    SemiAccurate gets some GTX480 scores

    .....snip.....

If potential buyers get a wide range of benchmarks and correct specs, the conclusion will likely be GTX480 = HD5870 in performance.

    ....snip.....

The end result is that the GTX480 is simply not enough for a resounding win in anything but the most contrived benchmark scenarios. It is well within range of a mildly upclocked HD5870, something ATI can do pretty much on a whim. The GTX480 can barely beat the second fastest ATI card, and doesn't have a chance at the top.
Just read this; not sure its been linked yet. Only one thingsprings to mind; uh oh.

    I'd still have one though!

Re: SemiAccurate gets some GTX480 scores

As I said in the previous thread, it's not going to be the end of nvidia just because their new card isn't top dog - it certainly didn't kill ATI back when the X2900 was released, despite it being considerably slower than the 8800GTX. But, of course, ATI took the hit knowing they couldn't compete in performance and instead aimed to produce a good value card that accepted it's position a rung or two down the ladder in terms of both performance and price.

NVidia's problem looks to be that, to match the priceerformance ratio of ATIs current gen cards, they'll be selling at very little margin, if not at a loss. And I strongly suspect that ATI can afford to drop their prices a little and still be profitable, which would be *very* bad news for NVidia. tbh, from everything SemiAccurate have reported recently (even taken with a reasonable pinch of salt), I'd rather have seen NVidia spend another year selling rebadged G200s and then actually make a profitable and marketable GPU, than make this much of a mess of a product launch...

Until it is finally released I'm reserving judgement really. They've released stinkers before... if they do it again hopefully they'll bounce from it quickly.

I'm surprised it is *that* slow given the die size c.f. the Cypress cards. It could be BS of course - Charlie's been duped before.

Re: SemiAccurate gets some GTX480 scores

Don't get me wrong, that 3D vision surround thing does look/ sound interesting although after I've dipped into my pocket for a GTX 4xx I doubt I wouldn't be able to afford buying 3 new monitor and a new card

Cuda also has it's followers. But even then, it can't demand a much higher premium over the HD5870 despite being probably more expensive to manufacture.

I agree, but let's not forget delays have been costly in the past too (see 3DFX).

I think the extent of which this is going to hurt them/help AMD depends largely on when all those G80/G92 users decide that it's time to buy a new card. According to Steam's hardware survey, those cards still dominate the rest by a significant margin. Another thing that I am wondering is if people do indeed tend to upgrade at around the same time. The G80/G92 were great cards, but even so, I am surprised by how much they dominate compared to slightly older/newer cards.

I guessed this was a Charlie Demerjian article before I clicked the link. He posts no data whatsoever apart from claiming clockspeeds.
I do think the GTS480 will turn out to be nothing special performance wise and extremely hot but I take the 5% at best claims with a pinch of salt. This card will have nearly twice the memory bandwidth and nearly twice as many shaders than the GTX285 so I expect it to be a lot faster then the GTX 285.
They'll probably still hacve to sell it at a loss though.

Indeed, I still have an 8800GTX and will not see any great need to upgrade it until I *need* to get a new monitor, which will hopefully be a year or two more yet. Then again, I strongly suspect that I am not typical of most graphics cards purchasers. And I still think NVidia will have an edge this year with mobile GPUs as its optimus technology looks pretty nifty... that might carry them long enough for a viable fermi 2 to be developed and manufactured...

Can't argue with that. The clockspeeds are ~ 10% down, but as you say everything else is double, pretty much. It should, in fact, have very very similar performance to a GTX295, really... unless they've somehow managed to make the shaders *less* efficient...

Overclock.net found some pricing (and funny reviews too) on the 480 @$680 (with a $20 saving!).

    470 pricing

No idea how real these are....
