If you can afford one of those water cooled 6800Ultra Golden Samples, you don't care about benchmarks, lets be honest.

Mine is watercooled and does 470 core smoothly Its a XFX 6800U so didnt cost me £600 either.

In regards to that review I think you are reading their graphs wrong AND they disabled the optimisations on the 6800's? I seriously would not base my buying decisions on that.

Look at the farcry graph, by far the most important aspect is the avg FPS, the XTPE is behind the Ultra.

As Vaul says both cards are great, however at the top end the Ultra is a better performer. When I had a XTPE I took it right up to 605mhz core now I got the Ultra and taken it so far to 480mhz core. Having played both the Ultra gives a more stable game play (avg FPS without dipping low like the XTPE).

    Just relaying my personal experiance.

Glad you're happy with your card Noxis.

Now Doom III has turned out to be crap though, in my opinion at least, I look forward to Half Life II even more. Be interesting to see if there is any sort of ATi advantage in that game. I expec there to be, not the 30% stuff Doug was on about, but maybe a smaller advantage. It is ATi's home game after all, like Doom III was always going to be Nvidias.

Shame it wasn't any good. Half Life II better not be poor as well now, or what are we going to play on our shiny new cards Noxis?

No point having these cards with nowt worth playing on them.

Personally I love Doom3 Brilliant game. I am expecting HL2 to be better tho I am thinking the 6800U will perform at around the same level as the XTPE tbh.

Its still a DX9 game and unless they specifically cripple the nv40 path its got no reason to be that 30% faster. I think that 30% must hark back to the FX vs 9x00 days tbh.

Before this gets into a nVidia vs ATi debate. Both x800xt and 6800u are brilliant cards that can handle pretty much anything at spectacular resolutions. It does'nt matter which one you get - its just preference. Its not like you can really tell much of a difference when playing a game. However what is clear is that doom 3 is simply a marketing tool for nVidia and HL2 is the same for ATi. So between nVidia, Ati, id and Valve everyone makes a stack of money whilst we have sub-optimal performance in one out of two of the big releases of the year depending on which card we go for. Sub-optimal meaning "i've just spent over £300 on a card so i expect it to run everything the way i want to"

Then you sir are very, very easy to please.

Good post Scooby. You're correct of course, ATi and Nvidia jumping into bed with Valve and ID probably isn't a good thing for us gamers, who will buy both games anyway.

Wait long enough and eventually both will get patched up to the same standard on both cards after people figure out what has been crippled, still won't stop Doom3 sucking more than a geriatric with menthol sweets though

Would anyone care to speculate on another one of Richdog's miraculous-finds-after-trawling-the-internet-ceaselessly-for-hours?

Apparently there are rumours that the ATI X800XT PE has been discontinued... http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=791018

It's bunk, apparently that's what some of the oem's are telling customers so they don't have huge preorder lists to deal with.
A couple of the guys on that thread are in retail and apparently thery're just having issues getting hold of enough gddr3 chips to finish the cards (Next big ram shipment is at the end of the month, hence the bulk availablity starting in September).

Glad hexus forums aren't like that, it decended into fanboy rantings within about a page and a half

    Vaul,

Thanks so much for the link. I've placed an order with them and they have told me today they are expecting more in soon. Fingers crossed!!!

So appart from not liking Doom3, what do you think of the rest of the card? Is the cooler ok? I presume it is true XT PE spec? (memory speed etc), no obvious corners cut to make it £320!?? etc, etc.

    Cheers!

Its an X800XT-PE, ATi spec. You get the card, a few cables and a driver disc. No games, no other software, hence the price.

The cooler is ATi reference, so is everything else. Its not held together with cellotape, its not got coffee stains on it.

    Its a brand new X800XT-PE.

'for those of you desperately clinging to the prospect of getting an xt pe for the price of a pro your ill fated hopes are being systematically reeled from your clutches.'

Not for me daddy. I've got one sitting on the shelf, and the bill to prove it.

Of course, its all tosh. What Stoo said, basically.

I got mine, assuming Richdog got his today, I expect he'll confirm later on.

I'll benchmark properly when my RAM arrives tomorrow. Its winging its way to me at the moment, so I wont bother benching with this 512mb stick of Crucial.
