Ahh, and the legendry Dell customer service starts......

Called to order as needed it delivered to my work address, and despite telling the lass that (in India, over a cr@p connection, with lag), the contract that she emailed me states my home address and she's charged me an extra £3

    Oh well, lets see.

Well, I may just have to eat my hat.

Despite the lass in India getting the delivery address wrong, and not giving me a customer number (making it impossible for me to track my order) I just got a call from the courier company asking to deliver it tomorrow!! Thats order Sat afternoon, deliver Tuesday. A full week before their estimated delivery date.

Even better, whem I pointed out that Dell had screwed up the delivery address and I wouldn't be there, they offered me a 5pm - 9pm delivery time to make sure that I would be at home to receive it!!

    I'm in shock.

Perhaps 2x20" widescreen (£780) would be a better choice?

Well thanx everyone for your advice.

My new Dell 2405 turned up at 5pm sharp today, 7 days earlier than customer services predicted, and i only ordered it on Sat afternoon.
Better still they haven't actually billed my credit card yet

It is HUGE. Been testing it out since half 5 or so. Half life 2, Counter Strike Source both look amazing, and thats with no AA or Af, and some of the settings turned down (running a 9800 Pro atm) this resolution is to die for.

Want to load up BF2 and a whole host of other games, but gotta go to work tomorrow, and only gonna get 5 hours sleep as it is.

Maybe just 1 quick look at FarCry.....

Yes, 1920 x 1200. Surprised me a bit too. Half Life 2 even recommends that I run at high detail, shader etc, except for AA and AF and still get very playable frame rates. I reduced water detail a bit to help out though.

In CS:S I dropped most things down to medium to keep the framerates smooth, but you don't loose too much eye candy at this high a res.

Can't wait to see what it'll look like once I get it connected to my new 4800 X2 7800GTX system that I'm ordering in the next couple of days

I can't believe people go 'oh many games don't support widescreen'.... a widescreen monitor is both a normal and a widescreen - if a game doesn't support it or something (and I have got every single gane I have working on widescreen, thanks to the widescreen gaming forums) then you can either stretch it, or have black bars on the side! TA DA!

So many people say it, sorry, it just winds me up. But I'm glad to see you bought a 2405FPW, 2005FPW for me was the furthest reach on my budget so that was a bit beyond me.... I mean when I bought it I was only 16 and I had no job (still no job ). And its also sweet you have a high powered system so you can run it all on max!

BTW freakin sweet system! I want to get a proper job and lush out on some next gen gear... thats if I find some oil bank underneath my house or something.

if your gaming then why get a x2? you gonna be burning a sh*t load of dvd-r's at the same time while benchmarking it?
if you arent doing the above then get a fx-55 or 57...

EDIT: Future proof yeh good point but still the FX prolly will be owning for awhile yet untill dual-core games go mainstream...

I would personally much prefer a high end X2 chip to the FX-57. My reason is that the FX-57 only has a fairly small gaming performance improvement over the high X2s, while the X2 has an enormous improvement in multi-tasking over the FX-57. You're right in saying that I don't tend to burn DVD-Rs while gaming - though it would be good if I could - but I do like to leave things like virus-scan running, I do regularly surf the net while burning a DVD, and so on. Unless the game is purely to be used as an optimised gaming system I really think that the X2 is the best high-end way to go.

As for the display, given that Dell at last have a reasonable price on the 2405fpw in the UK, I don't think there's any other option..... I've seen one in action just once, and it's pretty awesome....

I can't believe you've been allowed to spend £3k on such a gaming rig. I know I spend a bit on PC bits now and then, but my MRS gets well tired because of the time I spend on the machine. I'll be surprised if you still see each other, because I would have problems getting that rig.
