Nothing on port 80, everything else ok

I'm now officialy stumped as to what the heck is going on with my home laptop.

All of a sudden I could no longer browse the web at all, as I wasn't 100% happy with the install of XP I re-installed it anyhow, still unable to browse using IE6 and 7 and Firefox.

Here is where it gets weird, I'm able to do absolutely everything else though !. I can ping, I can do a tracert (tried it to bucket loads of different places).

The laptop has an Intel 2200BG mini pci card whcih appears to work fine (latest drivers) and connects to my Netgear Rangemax access point at full speed/strength.

Everything else I try on my home WiFi works fine (my desktop PC and my work laptop).

WTF is going one here ?.

You haven't by any chance added your web browsers on your laptop's firewall list? Could you perhaps have set your browsers to Offline mode?

You haven't got it configured to use proxy servers have you? That would affect port 80 amongst other things, whilst leaving networking unaffected.

Other option is to go Start>Run>cmd. Then type ipconfig /all, and post the results

Seeing your posts I should have added...

# No proxies being used
# Windows firewall disabled
# No other software or hardware firewalls
# IP address being successfully assigned via DHCP on my router (tried a manualy setup IP address as well just incase)

... this is clean install of XP done just a couple of days ago so I'm baffled. Only things added have been AVG anti-virus + all updates from Microsoft.

@ Budding - nope, note done that mate + Windows firewall is disabled.

@ dave87 - allready checked ipconfig, DHCP is happily assigning my IP address and gateway + DNS.

Ethernet is fine, able to browse quite happily then.

(used ethernet to re-install XP and connect to Windows Update etc.)

Have you tried disabling and re-enabling the wireless adapter? If you've done that, how about deleting it from Device Manager and getting windows to reinstall it?

Still no web browsing, but happily pinging hexus.net (resolves it to 195.78.94.240).

Using portable Firefox so I didn't have to install it (wanted to keep this a very clean XP install).

The laptop has XP installed then updated, then AVG and finaly Network Stumbler, nothing else so there's no rogue software getting in the way.

This is pretty freaky eh ?.

Yea, quite worrying. Did you leave the ethernet cable in whilst setting up the laptop? i.e. through the windows install?

It doesn't appear to be.

Yep, during recent re-install did everything via ethernet, more due to the fact that it was done at work whilst I was doing other things plus we use certificates installed via Group Policy for our office WiFi.

I keep getting the feeling that this is some sort of hardware fault but it connects to my access point fine and I can use all of the command line tools to prove connectivity and DNS resolution ... aaargh.

A longshot, but have you got the right drivers installed? I know with a Belkin wireless card I had it would install fine, but then cause no end of problems, until you changed drivers - same chipset, different revision

I'd try getting the latest PROSet drivers from intel, see if that helps matters...

Got the latest Intel 2200BG drivers installed, will try an old PCMCIA 802.11b card tomorrow (off to bed soon) as it seems that everything has been exhausted software wise ?...

Only other thing is a reinstall without an ethernet cable in. Make sure nothing nasty has hidden itself in the system during the install.

When using the wireless card can you telnet to port 80 on a webserver? Ie, start, run, 'telnet www.google.com 80' (the 80 is important)

If the connection works you'll just get a blank telnet window, if it fails it'll give you an error message.

If you can telnet then it seems to imply that the networking side of things is ok but the web browser(s) are playing up.
