CPU Usage on certain programs
Hi guys, i was just wondering if i could bring the CPU usage down on certain programs - im using TMPGenc XPress and im just encoding some avi's to DVD mpeg - but it's throttling the cpu, and im getting a over heat alarm (i set it in the bios to go off at 60*c), but some of the cores are reaching 70*c by that time.
how do i get it to lower the usage? i've looked in the setting...but im not sure...and the priority in the task manager for tmpgenc is on low as it is.

Sod lowering the cpu usage. Upgrade your heatsink and fan!
There is a tool called threadmaster that is free I think, but it probably doesn't work with Vista.
One free and easy option is to lower your CPU frequency or multiplier in the BIOS before you do any encoding.

yea, im starting to wish i just picked up decent heatsink & fan, when i built the PC recently. i could try uping the tri-cool antec fans in the case, but it's just noise.

What heatsink are you using? And what processor as a matter of interest? Does seem a bit odd that it's getting that hot even if you're using the stock heatsink. You got the fan turned down?

well basically, at the moment its a Q6600, with the stock intel cooler.
the CPU fan, is on legacy setting, but it only really goes up to 1700 rpm, when the load and temp goes up, (where as it stays up around 2000rpm with legacy disabled - i'll try that too) but theres 3 case fans, one 120mm blowing air out, and two 80mm taking air in - they have been turned down to the mid setting (around 2000 rpm i think for the 80mm, not sure about the 120mm).
hmm yea it is a lil odd, although that temp warning (60*c) is the lowest in the bios, i choose that one to be on the safe side.
blimey, that does get a little warm, sure HSF fitting and case airflow are OK, appreciate u have loads of fans but is airflow planned?
I built a Q6600 system for a friend who uses it to convert alot of AVI's to DVD and vice versa, it eats them alive and barely ever goes above 45C even after a good few hours encoding, hes running a scyth infinity HSF and 4x 120 sharkoon golfball, the system is practically silent

i really dunno - it could be just this program, as i've used the VSO software to make DVDs, but it never set off the alarm...but still, i think it is getting a lil warm when it shudnt. it shud be able to be ok with TMPEGenc. although - it uses 100% CPU, where as VSO uses around 50% so no wonder.
the heat sink was pretty firm stuck on there - there are a lot of cables in there, and its quite a small midi tower case, but i've tried to keep the air flow going, one 80mm at the front, one at the side, with a funnel/pipe fitting, aiming it directly to the cpu heatsink etc, and one 120mm at the back blowing out.
it idles around 35*.
Might be worth seeing if you can lower the voltage on the CPU. See what the lowest you can go is before it stops working.

Turning off the BIOS'es fan control will keep the temps down, but the fan will be running at 100% constantly. I'm pretty sure the quad core stock HSF is good for 2600rpm at full tilt.
It'll do until you can sort some more cooling.

well guys, im trying it now again, and to start of with i've just disabled the legacy control on the cooler, (coz im still new to playing with advanced bios settings and voltages etc, when im sure and have read up on it, i will) and it seems to be doing the trick - cores 1 & 2 are still getting close to 70*c, averaging around 64*c, tjunction around 52*c average. but no alrams.
i guess it'll have to do for now.

I could be wrong I'm working from memory, but 65c is acceptable fully loaded, not perfect but nothing will explode. I'd leave it like that for now and look into getting a better cooler.

one thing i wanted to ask...i wonder if you might be able to answer...it's relating to heatsinks and coolers:- once u take of the old one, does the old thermal paste get stuck on there? im worried abotu yanking off the old one and the cpu being stuck on to the heatsink. lol.
Heatsink should come off easy - it's not glue!
If you still have the same problem after reseating/applying the TIM onto the heatsink, you could try Process Tamer to see if it meets your needs of controlling the CPU usage.

^ hmm i checked out the info on that program, says it works in vista too, could come in handy in the future, thanks buddy!
