    Hard Drive Data Recovery Advice

I selected the 'autonuke' option in DBAN when booting from the UBCD 4 Win without realising it would automatically start wiping the attached hard drives.

I only wanted to wipe one of the hard drives

I receive a disk error when booting from the drive containing the windows installation, does anyone know how I can recover from this without wiping and starting again?

The images of the windows installation were on the same disk

Re: Hard Drive Data Recovery Advice

Depends how far the wiping process got - best option IMHO would be to start the computer with a live linux CD and see if the file systtemm is intact (drive will mount in read only mode anyway so you can see what files you have and you can copy them off. If you have wiped the MFT (master file table) it might still be possible to recover data because the MFT is replicated. However you are then getting into a murkier world.

First thing is to assess the damage using a live CD.

Will give Knoppix Live CD a go, should have a few others as well.

    Might try BartPE as well.

Knoppix is as good as any - good hardware support. If You can't see any files with that, it is unlikely you will see any with other live CDs - good luck!

    GetDataBack.

Free to see what it can/can't recover, you'll have to pay to recover though.

Re: Hard Drive Data Recovery Advice

No data was stored on the PC (was a backup PC) so fortunately thank God, I haven't lost anything.

Time to speed up the transfer of this PC to my friend - I was thinking of selling it to him a day or two ago

Edit: Reason for wanting to recover the data - easier to rebuild with an image than full re-installation

Re: Hard Drive Data Recovery Advice

There's good advice on the net to only have the drive you want to erase installed when you run DBAN - after all it is designed to irrecoverably destroy data. As mentioned above, if you quit the wipe soon enough most of your files should be fine but if it completed don't waste your time attempting recovery.
A few recovery tools I recommend are:
TestDisk and PhotoRec, both of which are available on SystemRescueCD and are completely free.

I've used TestDisk in the past - it's an excellent utility

Re: Hard Drive Data Recovery Advice

Of course if you back up regularly, you shouldn't need the recovery tools! But it is always easy to be wise after the event!
