Oh, interesting! I have a old PC upstairs with a similar problem to the OP, and it does indeed have a Gigabyte mobo (K8N). Is there a known issue?

UPDATE:

i have tried the following:

reconnected all the cables (power switch, sata, ide, psu cables)

tried booting from cd only(windows)

installed a new HDD (tested working)

all he above still causes the wierd boot-up

could be a fault with the motherboard, to be honest i don't know what it is, so unless someone has a solution, i am stuck with a fast pc which takes ages to boot-up, lol

Yes, I believe a BIOS chip problem. I had a very similar problem with my Gigabyte mobo (constant powering up and restarting loop, before it got to bios), had to RMA it which they fixed something - I can't remember what - and since then I've not had a problem.

oh and just to add, i also updated the bios on the mobo
