    Partition Magic failed merge

I tried to merge two partitions and partition magic got to 26% complete before freezing.

My primary partition is fine, but the other one is now displayed as "Unallocated".

I've used GetDataBack to recover some of the files but most of the files are missing.

Any ideas on what else I can do to recover the data?

Owch - from experience if GetDataBack fails you are in a world of pain. You could do worse than have a go with the trial version of Acronis Power Utilities - that has a partition recovery function which seems well recommended http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing...owerutilities/ for a free trial - not sure of functionality but if it shows you that it can recover your data and you really need the data then splashing out for the software then what's to lose?

Thanks I'll give that a go.

In GetDataBack I can see all of the files, with the correct names and file sizes but they just won't open.

The only files I care about are photos, and it looks like about half of them are OK.

its also a good idea to remove everything from the partitions before merging them, just in case*

Yeah I know. I thought that everything important was on my other hard drive, but I forgot about the photos

Also before making any changes of this nature take a backup. We ALL learnt this the hard way.

Is your version of GetDataBack the free or the full version? I believe the free version will only show you waht can be recovered, and that you have to shell out for the data to be recovered

I had a similar problem once. Fdisked the partitions away, created a new one, formatted. Then ran getdataback and got back 95% of what I should have had.

Make sure you are recovering onto another drive!
