Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?

At this point, no. C2Q9950 is still chugging along nicely for roughly 80% of my computing needs. Secondary (soon to be primary) machine is a 6core Xeon with 24gb of DDR3 ECC ram - all that's missing is a better gpu, and the FX1800 that came with the box is not too bad for some mid-level gaming - just no DX11... So no - no intention nor need at this point. Maybe 5 years or so down the road.

Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?

I don't have a gaming PC at all right now, and I'm looking to buy and build from scratch. I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for Skylake to build, or just build now on X99 with a 5280k 6 core? Even though it's currently underutilized, it might be nice to have the DDR4 (I know the new Z170 boards will also support DDR4) and the extra cores, especially with DX12 in play. Though from what I've read, DX12 is only making use of 4 cores right now, and any more is not needed.

There's also the option of saying **** it to both and going with the z97 and 4790K and just upgrading the whole deal down the line when more cores are actually important. But spending money on a dead end platform makes me feel uneasy. To clarify, I don't do any video editing or streaming, and I'm looking to build just a gaming PC. I realize more cores aren't needed right now, again, I'm just looking to sink some money and not have to potentially spend more sooner rather than later to upgrade, should we see better utilization of cores in the near future. But damn, things are feeling behind the times on that front.

Would be grateful for your thoughts!

    Not when it's released, no.
I would want to wait until AMD release Zen next year what with it being a totally new microarchitecture, and Skylake being nothing more than yet another tweak to the core series.

No, going to give my 2600k a new GPU to suggle up to and call it quits.

Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?

I was on a P55-based i5-750 at stock clocks and was considering upgrading when Skylake came out, but a friend of mine upgraded to X99 and had his old components he didn't want.

I ended up getting an i7-3770, a Z77 G1.Sniper M3, and some other miscellaneous components and a case for $250 AU. Needless to say, after some cleaning and swapping of components, along with a new 850 EVO SSD and 16 GB of DDR3, I'm satisfied enough to wait until Zen and Kabylake/Cannonlake at the very least.

My laptop I purchased about 8-9 months ago, so it's a Haswell-U based machine. As good as the improvements sound from Skylake, again I'm content enough with it. Hopefully Asus continue to update the UX303 lineup, there's nothing else out there that has discrete graphics in a 13" ultrabook. A Kabylake/Cannonlake based ultrabook with Pascal graphics would be super tempting in a year or so though...

Maybe next year. For now I'm doing just fine with my i7-4771. The only reason I'm considering Skylake at all is because I need a server boxen again, it's driving me mad depending on Windows for network services. Otherwise the performance difference wouldn't be worth it at all.

I hardly ever plan an upgrade. Stuff fails, and I have to buy whatever is best to replace it.

So, fingers crossed nothing fails for another generation here

Aiming for Skylake-E, if or when it arrives. If not, then whatever enthusiast platform is around in 18-24 months' time, since at that time it should be time for an all-round upgrade.

Not worth it over a 4790k for gaming ...

A new monitor (and this one) is also an option for me though i have been hoping the Philips would drop significantly under £500. Having a fixed television stand and a glossy screen are the two things (aside from price) that have so far stopped me from taking the plunge.
Its also knocking on a bit now having been released a good two years ago and i wonder if a newer model is immenent.

I am planning on upgrading. This i7-920 has served me well but does feel close to the end of it's life; as does thel Dell 2407wfp monitor.

I will however be waiting for more more benchmarks and the matx boards to be released. I will be putting Win10 on this system first, so if the 920 and a 970gtx are still happy (Fallout4 ) I'll probably delay the upgrade.

Fingers itching for upgrading my 7year old i7, but will have to wait and see the prices before i decide, sure i saw some where that dx12 utilities the onboard graphic, working with a normal card, but also something to see once its out.

Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?

NO NO NO I have a i5 4690k running at 4.6 very low volts 1.2 so a lottery winner for me and from what I've seen the Skylake has nothing to offer except igpu about 50% better then current cpu's & I have 2 970 in sli so igpu means nothing to me as for ddr4 I have 16g 2666 of ddr3 so nothing to get from that upgrade so to be honest I'll get nothing except wasting my money, Intel have got to a stage were they just can't get any more out of cpu's and this has been the case since sandy bridge so they just add more core like haswell-E or better igpu's which means nothing to me as I'm a GAMER

Not on my desktop, I've just replaced my atx x58 desktop with an itx x99 so that will do me for the next 5 years. I probably will replace my samsung tablet with a Microsoft Surface 4 as I think skyline will be great for mobile device.

Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?

I'm certainly not top of the range running a pretty cheap z87 board and an i5 4670k but I'll be surprised if Skylake is a big enough improvement for me to bother upgrading my PC for. As it stands, it seems even just the 4670k will handle any games thrown at it, and while faster Handbrake encodes is always good, I don't think Skylake will make enough difference to warrant a purchase. I'll most likely be holding off until the next major release, just like I'll wait for the next Nvidia series (or perhaps AMD, we'll see) before I upgrade from my 760 to an x70. 970 would be a significant upgrade, but not significant enough for the price IMO.

Re: QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?

I'll be waiting until next year as I'm still ok with my i5+geforce based laptop and ps4. If I upgrade next year, it'll be Zen or Kaby Lake and hopefully Zen won't be a let down.. also nvidia's Pascal and AMD's Arctic islands coupled with a 4K monitor will be a powerful incentive to have a complete pc upgrade for those with older PC setups.
