QOTW: Are you planning on upgrading to Intel Skylake?

Looking to Skylake for my home server build, mostly because I'm fed up of waiting. I'm planning to stick with my i7 960 in my desktop for a while longer though -- I'm hoping it'll keep me going 'til Cannonlake, it's still holding its own for the moment.

The next desktop upgrades I'll be looking at will be based on driving 4K @ ~90fps for VR; I'm hoping that we'll see that become a possibility with NVIDIA's Pascal flagship. For the moment, my GTX 970 is giving me all the performance I need at 1080p, I may step to SLI 970s if I can find a 4k G-SYNC monitor to suit.

I'll be upgrading from a Core 2 Quad Q9550 bought mid-2008 as an upgrade to an even older Core 2 Duo E6320.

LGA775 lasted a while for me I don't feel confident that we'll see "7nm" CPUs, or perhaps just not for consumer use, so LGA1151 might also have to last me 7+ years.

I really can't see why I would. I don't change motherboards unless I am upgrading the cpu and that requires it.

wow you have done well to last on a 9550, tried my best but VMs were super slow, DDr2 ram was expensive so thought its time

I want to upgrade, but there just doesn't seem to be any proper information on exactly what you'll get for your money. As soon as its released, and we get some decent write ups about it, I'll start looking more seriously at whether its worth it.

There are 3 points here that ring true with me.
1. I am running what is now a very old Socket 775 rig (Q9550) and the CPU & Slower DDR2 ram is holding my back.
2. It still runs everything that I need it to, but slower.
3. I don't "plan" to upgrade, I simply do when something fails, or when the computer no longer performs as intended.

In all fairness, I've been waiting for mainstream DDR4 memory (for the mid range Intel cards), so this may well be the time for me to upgrade. All I have learned over the years is that holding off for that one special component is kind-of a waste of time, as they rarely seem to deliver on launch. I'm not really interested in 4k gaming, nor will I change my habits. For now I'd just be happpy with a system that was simply quieter & loaded my games faster!

Doubt it, my Ivy setups still aren't being taxed and even my old i7-950 is overkill for what it's being asked to perform....my other systems do not need the power or cost associated with an upgrade.

Will see how much longer my 920 and P6T hold out. If they go then I'll upgrade otherwise I'll be waiting for ZEN to see if it stimulates a bit of competition and drops the prices. Coupled in with DDR4 an upgrade to Skylake could prove very expensive

Would love to have seen this as a poll. The majority seem not to be upgrading and I am in agreement with them.

I will run my 2500k and gtx570 for a while yet. The gfx card is the only thing really affecting me. I am currently trying to clear my Steam library and most of the games are old so my gfx card will last a while yet.

I think my next big upgrade will be for 4 or more K, and VR.

No upgrade for my desktop, the i5 4670K/Z87 combo is still going strong. Might consider an NUC/Compute stick to plug into the TV, but I'll see how the reviews go.

Not at this time. I'm running Core i7 processors on Z77-based motherboards on both boxes and decided to upgrade to Titan X cards, new 1,000-watt PSUs, and 6TB hard drives instead.

First thing I'm doing is getting MSI 980 Ti & 4K Monitor, still looking at best choice. Thinking about i5 Skylake, Z170 & DDR4.

I've got an old HP Core 2 Duo laptop which I've kept usable for ages by installing an SSD. It's battery is now dead and would be about 70 quid to get a replacement and so it runs only via the main now - I'm waiting on Skylake CPUs to be released before I make a decision on a new laptop purchase, not necessarily because I'm going to buy a Skylake based machine, but mainly because of the effect that the release will have on the price of Broadwell kit. I've waited this long and so I'm in no hurry to upgrade this particular laptop and not necessarily with the latest gear. However, I also have an original Surface Pro which chews through a charge like you wouldn't believe, and I hear rumours of the Surface 4 using Skylake - I'm going to be "on it like a car bonnet".
