Played a lot of Action Quake 2 (on Wireplay dialup!) and Medal of Honor way back when but don't really do multiplayer FPS thesedays.

Quake 3, in my view, and I'm still playing it.
Even if it's very old, there's still no shortage of players.
Quake 3 Arena for me although we always played it as us vs the computer. Loved it 15 years ago and still enjoy it today.
Counter Strike 1.6 You needed lightning reactions, otherwise you were dead in a nanosecond!
Burstfire seems ok for a game that mimics Rainbow Six Siege alot with the elements it uses
Golden Eye for Consoles, it basically created the console FPS genre. And then Unreal Tournament, 2k4... Rankin.... sooooo much Rankin...
Also shout outs for Global Agenda (I put over 2000 hours into that game) and the original Planet Side.
Call of Duty: United Offencive. Played almost 5 years that game. Great game with best mechanics ( all players start with same "line"), main weapon, sidearm and 1 grenade. When you kill/take flag etc. you get your rank up and get more grenades and ammo.No fancy robots, stupid boost.. just simply shooting and boy that recoil vs. new games :/
Battlefield 1942
Hard to call a best one, but my favourite of all time was BF2142. A nice change from the same old same old with the futuristic weapons and vehicles, but solid gameplay and gun handling to back it up. Pod launching from Titans always kept the games dynamic, unlike the Metro maps you see these days. I'm going to conveniently forget about the terrible rubber banding in Titan mode and dolphin diving.
The genre has come a long way and I think BC2 was a big game changer when it came out (especially graphically), but nothing really huge has happened since then. Just smaller iterations of the same thing.
It's a toss up between UT99 and UT2004...
Tough one.... I would have to go with Unreal Tournament... no counterstrike1.6.... no wait Battlefield2.... Yeah Battlefield2 I think.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say Mech Warrior 4 capture the flag.
If there were still server i'd still be playing.
For me it has to be the original CounterStrike.
I still have a lot of fond memories of Unreal Tournament (1999), which I continued to play for over a decade after it was released. It has been a while since I've played it now, but for a long time it was a firm favourite and I spent many hours not just playing online, but also in the map editor supplied with the game. It was the very first game I ever played online too, after a mate convinced me to give it a try... 56K dialup, however, wasn't fun It kind of makes me feel sad, looking back, since it reminds me of the happy years I spent at college, and of friends I haven't seen, or spoken to, in a long time. I wish I could turn back the clock....
