Consoles - Halo 3
PC - Counter Strike
For me, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Ravenshield with all the mods and add-ons. Loved this game, so much.
#Tango Down#
Joined my first clan because of this game.
For me, Day of Defeat Source. Played in a clan, and have by far the most hours on it.
Honourable mentions:
- HL Deathmatch (Crossfire!!)
- CS / CS Source
- Team Fortress (original Quake version)
- CoD4
- MW2
- Halo
- BF2
- Unreal Tournament
- Killzone 2 (though I'm probably in the minority on this one)
- GOLDENEYE! How could I forget that one?!
I go through phases, but I think on balance, FPS is my favourite genre![]()
For competitive multiplayer, Quake II. It has some of the best, most precise controls, great levels, and the weapons react well. Also, there aren't too many weapons.
For cooperative multiplayer, Doom II. Hands down phenomenal level design. And nothing beats finding your way around levels with your mates by the mini-map and the trail of corpses you leave in your wake.
I'd say...
Unreal Tournament 99 / Q3A: the game(s) set the standard(s) for Arena based play. The arguments about which one was actually better have been going on for over a decade and half... and show no sign of ending.
Planetside pre Core Combat: To date no other game, period, has come close to what Planetside achieved. Popular games these days brag about matches made of 32, 64, 128, or even 256 (M.A.G.) Players. In 2003 on 32bit x86 hardware not far removed from what shipped in the original Xbox... Planetside was pushing 133 players *PER* faction. There were 3 factions. 399 players... per map... each potentially with their own unique weapon loadout... and potentially their own unique and independently moving vehicle. This is a game that also has blown America's Army clear out of the water. Not even AA has managed to capture the strategy and tactics required to wage a war complete with fuel funs and re-supplies into an active combat zone. Not even AA has managed to capture the feel of an Ariel Armada running bombing runs or flying troops in against heavy AA fire. No other game has simulated war on the scale that Planetside managed; period. Stop. Part of that scope and scale was providing gameplay options for those who weren't so good in a firefight. Terrible with aiming? Roll a max armor and soak up a few hits. Grab a special assault and lob grenades. Man a turret. Don't feel like fighting directly? Grab a medkit, lay mines, set up barriers, repair equipment, make supply runs, fly transports.. and so on.. and so on.. and so on. It was entirely possible to level up to max level and gain command ranks... without ever actually getting involved in a single fire-fight. No other game that I'm aware of... has ever even come remotely close to achieving what Planetside managed.
While the arguments might be made over which game popularized the idea of FPS games as mainstream entertainment between Quake and Unreal... there is only one undisputed title for best multiplayer FPS of all time. It's Planetside.
Call of duty 2,counter strike 1.6 & source,Team fortress 1 % 2 and battle field 3 % 4!
haven't play battle field 3 and 4 because my pc can handle all the modern games but my opinion its the best multiplayer fps.
Team fortress is the best for me because its fun and funny xD....Lol my fps only 20-40
Me and all of my classmate friends played counter-strike at my school computer lab when the teacher said 'you can do what ever you want' it was fun until a random blue screen appeared
Holla!
wolfenstein
Unreal Tournament. My BT phone bill was £200 per month playing this on dialup.
Sumanji (22-08-2015)
Operation flashpoint / resistance for being so open world for its time and as an all rounder I would have to go with BF2
Vietcong - I really wish they would have a go at making a modern version of it - it's a bit of a pain trying to run it post-Vista.
Vietcong 2 was rubbish though.
COD 4 would be my next pick, more recently Battlefield 3.
Battlefield 2
PC - Unreal Tournament 2003/4 and Quake II. For console it would have to be Golden Eye N64.
In co-op mode Serious Sam*. Co-op on console is Halo series and Borderlands 2.
*This happened during a session of SS
Iranu: Right are we ready?
Mate: Hold on there's a button here. Shall I press it?
Iranu: Go on then.
[Presses red button] Dooof! A boxing glove comes out the wall and punches him dead.
Mate: WTF! It killed me. Damn now I've got to run all the way back. (We are all falling about laughing).
5 mins later
Mate: Right I'm back. Oh look at that there's a little mouse hole.
Iranu: Where?
Mate: Here, look. [Goes over to the mouse hole and crouches] Aaaaaaargh. Mini bull comes charging out the hole and kills him stone dead!
Mate: That's it I'm not pressing another damn thing or doing anything!
Rest of us can't stop laughing as we wait for him to catch back up before taking on stupid numbers of enemy.
