QOTW: Which is the best multiplayer FPS game of all time?

In order I played them:
- Golden Eye
- Quake 2/3
- TF2
- COD 4/MW2
- Killzone 2
- CS GO

My favorite was probably Killzone 2 because of the tactics involved, the noire setting and the amount of players - but it has died out now. TF2 is the most fun to be had in FPS period

Me and my cousins spent ages on N64 GoldenEye, used to love re-painting the level with paintball mod. After that my first serious game was UT2004, and then BF2, and finally Cod 4 (the last decent one).

I spent many hours playing UT2004 RPG/Invasion, and loved the Rankin level, which someone else has already mentioned.

Would say Battlefield 2 (I also appreciate 3 + 4, and Bad Company 2). The game-play was ace (especially with friends) and the scale of the maps was amazing for the time - the dragon valley map was beautiful in it's scale and visuals - flying down there in a chopper was great!

For me, Day of Defeat Source. Played in a clan, and have by far the most hours on it.

I go through phases, but I think on balance, FPS is my favourite genre

I will +1 killzone 2 - it was a fantastic game which I put a hell of a lot of hours into at the time. I don't think anything will top UT tho for sheer LAN gaming fun.

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was brilliant .. and FREE! The thing I liked about it was how you'd collaborate with team members and it'd encourage players to use different classes to achieve the goal, rather than just a free-for-all.

Nothing for me beats Natural Selection 2 played competitively. It's a while since I played, as I have a group of friends who were interested in other games at the time, but I put a lot of hours into NS2 and the strategic depth of that game in 6v6 competitive play far outstrips any of the other games I've played going right back to Wolfenstein 3D and ROTT.
I enjoyed the strategy at high level in a true FPS game, but you don't get these in random online games and the investment needed to get to high level is large. For me NS2 has such a strong lore and atmosphere that it can drag you right in.
The skill level required for the top end play is insane (I never made it that far in NS2), but even at moderate skill level, the games are intense and very varied (especially considering the fairly small maps) due in part to the asymmetry of the teams, but also because of the generally pretty good balancing of the game.

High individual skill is rewarded, as is strong teamplay and out-thinking your opponents. The perfect combination of components in an online FPS, I think.

Counter-Strike beta 6.2. Pre broadband amazingness.
But even better than that is Battlefield Bad Company 2. Never in all my days have I played a more fun and entertaining and fair shooter. Now where the heck is BFBC3!!

Dated by modern standards, still lots of fun, has a next to zero learning curve and , most importantly, unskilled players can still get kills.

Another vote for Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on the N64. Goldeneye pretty much set the stage in this genre!

Only one contender for me, Goldeneye on the N64 was the best hands down.

Best on the PC for me was COD: MW2. Every COD since has been rubbish and I don't even bother buying them anymore.

More old school games I used to play on PC were Blake Stone, Doom, wolfenstein which were enjoyable for their time!

On the PC there is simply no debate to be had. Castle Wolfenstein 3D defined the genre. We owe that game everything as it shaped the future and was the catalyst that created the crucible of modern FPS development. The end.

FPS games are different things to different people. A game that is forgiving might be more enjoyable for the more casual gamer (a category I fall into nowadays), but for those who who enjoy testing their skills (a category I used to fall under), the game should allow a player to survive a relatively to his/her skill.
