For me it had to be SiN. 1998 was the year of Unreal, Half-Life, Shogo, Tribe and many other FPS based around the Quake 2 engine (itself released at the end of 1997), but somehow the one I was really hooked on was the largely overlooked SiN. Despite playing most of the others, I kept coming back to SiN for my multiplayer FPS needs.
Objectively, I do have to give it to Half-Life though. Unlike most, I found both the single player and DM boring. But thanks to that game, we ended up with TFC and CS. Those two provided me with many hours of multiplayer entertainment too.
For a short time I was hooked on Kingpin too, and always wished hat Shogo and a bigger community. Giant transforming robots offered so much potential at the time (and today - I am still hoping that a sequel or spiritual successor will eventually be released).

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory without doubt.
Quake 2 - Plus Painkeep Mod
UT 99
ET:QW
BF3
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
I think the one I've had most fun playing has to be Battlefield 2. The newer versions seem to have lost something since version 2, it might be that the maps feel 'smaller' somehow, even the larger maps. Bad Company 2 would be a close second though.
Hmm i would say Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory or True Combat:Elite.
I haven't been playing games for the past 2-3 years but for me it is Battlefield 2.

Cs 1.6 and Quake 3 OSP. Unreal tournament 2004 was also quite fun
The more one seeks, the more one finds and so you realise there is a lot more to be found.
Quake 2 - From all the occasions I have never played this game, I feel I am perfectly qualified to say it's the best game that I've never played. I hope that means that I now won't get banned by DR or any of his crew.
I have a few favourites but I find it hard to call which is the best. At the moment BF4 is my favourite, but BFBC2 was also a great game, and was probably the first multiplayer FPS that I really played extensively as an online game. Though before that I had played many hours of the Unreal Tournament series but only on LAN as I didn't have an internet connection that would support online play.
CS 1.6 was probably my first fps game for online multiplayer gaming, I even had my own server for this for a short while, I used gun game and some rpg mod ftw.
COD:MW3 was my first COD game, and I really enjoyed that in the beginning but stopped playing when I got frustrated by the number of cheats online, in one game I was being killed with headshots at my spawn point by a player who was stood in his own spawn spot on the other side of the map with all of the buildings, trees, bridges and other features between the two of us.
UT99 for the fast paced action,PS2 for the scale and TF2 for the silliness.
It has to be Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2004 or one of the Tribes games.
First FPS I played was Delta Force 2 and then Delta Force Land Warrior came out! It was a brilliant game and a great community for making maps. Must have spent hundreds of hours on it levelling up for no reason lol

I've been playing Counter-Strike in some form or other since 2000. Mostly CS:CZ, which I ended up prefering to the regular version.
And now CS:GO for the last year or so, after having had a break from CS for a couple of years. CS:Source has always left me cold, however. It just never had the right "feel" to it. I thought the same would be true for CS:GO, but luckily I was proved wrong.
I guess this is a pretty elaborate way of stating which multiplayer game I prefer...
Mine is and has been since 2006 Joint Operations Typhoon Rising
