Re: QOTW: Do you like RGB lighting in your PC?

To be fair, I don't mind case lighting, side windows etc.. and I don't really mind RGB (to an extent) - I have a NZXT Hue+ but I can't remember the last time I used it. I just hate the "RGB everything" bandwagon that just about every manufacturer has jumped on - it feels like a substitute for quality, and a lot like the 3D movement in film making - "it's awesome cuz it's 3D".

I had a K65 RGB board and after piddling around for an hour making fancy patterns, I ended up setting it to a dim white back light, because that's my preference. I ended up selling the RGB board and going back to my QF Rapid-i with it's white back light, because it's a better board.

I also have RGB LED strips taped to the back of my monitor and run as a back light to mitigate screen glare (it's dark in the man cave), but they're set to a single colour and run off my monitor's USB power.

Not sure if my mouse is RGB - never checked, but I don't care enough to find out.

No, I hate it. It adds unneccessary cost and looks tacky. It's a pc not a fairground attraction.

I hate all this ridiculous plastic that is covering motherboards these days as well. How about giving us decent heatsinks that actually work and look good instead? Motherboards are more expensive than ever yet look terrible covered in plastic and RGB. I would rather have something that is functional than tacky.

Re: QOTW: Do you like RGB lighting in your PC?

The only lighting I need on a board is for debugging.

You can rig up some setups to change colours to signify temperature buildup, but broadly speaking it's an irrelevance that users become oblivious to after a few minutes after installation. If it's to show off to their friends, they'll typically find their friends don't care. so they take pictures and show of to people on the internet, who typically don't care because they're too busy trying to get a pat on the back for the own pics.

RGB has always been a marketing gimmick that offered nothing, but attention to people who want attention.

    That.

Status LEDs are one thing. 'Pretty' lighting is another. I want several things from a PC case, chief among them being function over form, and a decent enough build quality that I don't slice fingers open every time I work on it. After that, as simple, clean and unobtrusive as possible. The very last thing I want is to slap coloured lights on it. It's a computer case, not a christmas tree.

Re: QOTW: Do you like RGB lighting in your PC?

Not really. I like having light illuminate a PC but not RGB, nothing that changes colour or transforms through a rainbow or even just lights up from every single component.

Truth is I'm a sucker because I just want some relatively dim but visible white lights that let me stare in there and hypnotize myself into staring at the middle distance.

But uh, yeah. A minimalist illuminated theme is good, anything more is offensive.

This. All I ask is a sturdy metal box that's quiet and has all the ports I need. After that I don't care what it looks like.

Re: QOTW: Do you like RGB lighting in your PC?

I like lighting in my case, but isn't something that is a must have. I do typically like a solid color. Currently my Level 10 snow edition is set to red right now.

By the way, I'm not a hyperactive nine year old that plays with frogs, though my 2 kids did like frogs years ago.

Re: QOTW: Do you like RGB lighting in your PC?

I love it when people take the time and put some thought into how they set it up. Otherwise I prefer white or light colors that don't wash out details too much. The standard rainbow puke pattern is fun to try out for a bit like some kind of aesthetic benchmark, but it gets tired fast.

It does look nice, but at the same time I don't really want to pay a premium for it or really feel like it's worth consuming power for something you barely look at.

RGB should be about the control of the colours and lighting, not simply throwing everything you can.
Why bother to coordinate, if you are then going to smother and completely obliterate any sign of it.
Colour choices should complement, not contrast with the rest.

Rainbow Puke. I like that one.
I shall have to remember to use that.

Just about sums it up for me too. Fairy lights are for Christmas trees.

Re: QOTW: Do you like RGB lighting in your PC?

No! As a professional audio producer, if I can see any kind of LED's inside the case then the case isn't as quiet as it could be. Noise levels are more important than stupid lighting.

I use my studio PC to game on too. Similarly, if I can see any stupid lighting other than what's on my monitor then my immersion levels are lower. So RGB keyboards and mice can sod off too!

Not really, as someone who is now unfortunately distinctly middle aged I think it appeals to the younger generation, my son has his RGB keyboard and headphones. I do remember when illumination first appeared in PC cases and fans around 2001.

Using RGB to obtain a single colour scheme - ok

Using multiple colours to make your PC look like a Christmas tree - tacky
