I bought this enclosure yesterday (USB 2.0 version) and I'm quite pleased with it. I put in my 200GB Maxtor DiamondMax +10 in the enclosure and WinXP picked it up right away.

    Just one minor gripe

Is it normal that the aluminium casing on the inside of the Icy Box has lots of scratches and just generally looks kinda messy instead of just smooth and shiny?

It all looks fine on the outside though

Can anyone who owns one take a very close up shot of the inside of the case and the underside of the lid of the Icy Box?

    I would but I don't have a digicam handy.

My sample was like that. I think they decline to polish the inner surfaces for cost reasons, simply because you never see it in normal use.

Yeah the inside of mine isn't exactly tidy, but it doesn't look too bad to be honest.

It turns out that this is a big problem with, apparently, the Prolifics PL3507 chipset that is used in the enclosure. One need only Google "prolific PL3507" to see the vast number of people affected by firewire data corruption problems...

Until I can resolve this problem, I'd not recommend any version of the Icybox except the basic USB2 model - or indeed the USB2/Firewire version, provided the user only makes use of the USB2 interface.

If anyone has any solution to my problem, please please please do get in touch.
I got the same with my 250gb hdd, which is why i sold it in the end.

It worked fine on the usb2 interface but i wanted to use firewire and it naffed 2 drives up....

As Apex knows I've also had HD corruption with the usb/firewire version, been running fine on the usb connection for a while now, anyone know how I find out the rev of the chip and the version of firmware?

Same corruption here, sent it back as a RMA and the company didnt batter a eyelid as they'd had a fair amount of the ones they had sold.

Went for a LaCie external HDD in the end, and the difference in quality is night and day.

Do LaCie do a decent external firewire AND usb2 drive yet? I looked a while ago and the nice porsche-designed 3.5" ones were either or, not both

I think prolific are the only guys to make a chipset for USB2.0/Firewire so all devices are in the same boat.

However after flashing my firmware (see above posts by me) I've had no trouble, although I need to test it some more to be sure.

There's the Oxford chipset, I think they do a combined USB2/Firewire one-chip solution, the 922. Anyone know of enclosures that use this one instead?

Ah, I've not seen that one, but now you mention it I have indeed heard of it.

If you find any let me know - I buy one and compare it against my Icy Box.

I fixed my firewire data problems with my Icybox (PL3507-based) by downloading the latest firmware from the following sites:

The Application is Located in "Folder 1" in the ZIP below:
    http://www.raidsonic.de/350UEfw.zip

The latest (unofficial) firmware that has fixed the problem for me can be found here:
    http://member.newsguy.com/~siccos/PL3507%20Firmware.htm

    Go for the Firmware:
    http://member.newsguy.com/~siccos/fi...7B_d110904.zip

Of course all this is at your own risk... but my plan was to RMA it whether this voided the warranty or not... (if it failed to solve my firewire problems).

Thankfully - as of about a week since updating - I have had no further problems (touch wood).

    Good luck,

    Rory

Must also agree though, that the Lacie external drives are good. Though I much prefer the old d2 cases to the new P3 ones. It's just a shame you can't by the enclosures alone... Although, having done a benchmark my Icybox (Firewire) is faster than my Lacie (firewire)...
