Is the firmware update post a few pages back suitable for the USB-only version of the icybox?

Well, as an update to my problems. I don't think I can flash any firmware to the unit now that I've messed it up. I'm going to take it back tomorrow to see if they have any solutions. I think I'm going to be honest though and tell them that it was me that messed it up.

On a side note, I bought another Icy Box and the version number is different. It's a IB-351 BL.. I was wondering if anyone knew why this is a different version?? It has exactly the same ports and spec.

But whats the next best alternative?

Seems like the only decent one out there. I need to not only be able to choose what bran drive goes in it, but also be able to swap out with several drives

It's actually quite a good piece of kit. I'm only having problems with it because I've gone and buggered mine up. From the previous posts it seems like there is a problem with the firewire.. which can be solved by updating the firmware.

As you have the USB-only version, you shouldn't need to update your firmware?

My new one is working fantastically!

My job now though is to try and fix my old one. I can't flash any firmware to it using the current ROMflashing utility as it can't detect the unit.

Mine is fine other than recent delayed write failures. Thing is, they happen when i don't even unplug the drive, its just on and connected, then out of nowhere it comes up with the error

    Question

I'm seriously interested in buying one of these to re-home one of my existing hard drives but I'm reluctant to commit until I know that my data will be safe. I was looking into buying an enclosure with an ethernet port but almost all of them need to start with a clean drive.

Can somebody please confirm for me that if I take my (NTFS formatted) drive out of my desktop machine and put it in one of these little beasts that I should be able to carry on as usual with all my data still in place.

    Thanks,
    Craig

yeah should be ok as long as you've not encrypted your filesystem to your user account (eek).

Excellent! Think I'll order one then. No encryption for me, I've had that problem before!

I'd be careful to ensure that, if connecting via firewire, the box has had it's firmware appropriately patched/flashed.

Ok i'm getting more problems now, i think its because i change hard drives quite often and the icybox doesn't like it.

It use to work perfect even with constant swapping, something must have worn out in the connections.

Now i can plug a different drive in, and the blue LEDs won't light up, i can hear the drive spinning up but i don't think the box can see it.

And then i mess around with all the cables and by luck sometimes it starts working again best of all, i've lost the receipt !

Just to check, you do leave it for a minute or two to see if it spins up right? The only reason I say this, is that I've found that some hard drives (for some unknown reason) seem to take much longer than others to 'work' in the Icybox, i.e. before all the blue lights come on. For me, at least, it is generally Maxtor drives (in my opinion Maxtor are generally rubbish... so I should not be surprised that they take ages for the Icybox to get running... but anyway...) that cause the problems for me...

Thought I'd mention this, in case you are worrying over nothing. Apologies if it sounds somewhat 'simple' (along the lines of "have you tried plugging it in?").

    Best

Yes, normally the seagate drive takes 2-3secs to spin up and then the blue LEDs come on, whereas when i put the samsung in there the LEDs come on immediately.

Not sure what my options are now, can't believe i didn't keep the receipt, i keep all receipts! Typical that the one thing that breaks is the one i can't take back

Just to report back... having had my old 250GB Maxtor fail... the replacement 250GB Maxtor now failed too, after only ~12 months. I'm not sure whether to even bother with the warranty repair/replacement. I think I might just go ahead and buy a REAL WORKING DRIVE... like a Seagate. Maxtor are utter turd.

I'm sticking with Samsungs, I tried a Seagate and it had a few issues, and i don't want to even touch Maxtor
