    Icy Box

    Good Grief!

I bought two of these little beauties in about 3 weeks ago to use as a mobile disk, and for back up reasons.

In this time both machines have corrupted data, and I have lost plenty of gigs. Luckily (being an untrusting sort of guy) I backed up all the data before relying totally on the icy.

I am so pleased to have found this link. I will now try the previous threads ideas on updating the firmware, but to be honest may just RMA the little bu*gers as they have caused me hours of annoyance.

I have a lacie d2 250gb external hard drive which has NEVER failed, running on a mac.

A search on google led me here, and I must say I am delighted to find that other people have the same problem as I had, its nice to know that the problem is nothing i am doing my end!

PS the version I had/have is the firewire/usb2 version, my problems have all occured through the firewire port.

    Cheers guys
    Tony

Yes, I know what you mean...

I wish Lacie would sell their cases - even if they were £50 I'd be a sucker for one or two, as they are just so goddamn reliable - at least relative to the competition!

Anyway, had the same problems as you -- but updating the firmware did fix it. of course, was a leap of faith to begin with; but has proved reliable.

Good luck in your endeavours. Report back whatever you choose to do --- or if you ever come across someone with some old lacie d2 cases ;-)

got a forum mailer about this thread, I too have the usb/firewire version and have lost data due to corruption while using the firewire port (drive runs fine on usb port), decided to bite the bullet and update the firmware, updated to the latest and tested with an app linked from the firmware page, all went well and (touch wood) is working fine on the firewire port

    Everything was going so well...

Everything was working fine - until I just turned my PC on after being away for a week or so, and now the Icybox with the Maxtor 250gb drive in is playing up. I can browse to the root of the drive, but if I try and go any 'deeper' i just get a generic error message, or after a while it will let me through.

I fear the problem is with the crappy Maxtor drive rather than the case... am sick to death of RMAing these pieces of junk... hmmm...

I'm going to hold my hands in the air and call myself a stupid tw8t first.

Ok, I've been trying to sort out a problem with my new Icy Box this morning. It seemed to be working ok, the computer was reading the device. Device Manager was showing drivers in the USB and Disk Drive sections when the device was switched on. Everything seemed to be working fine except for the fact I couldn't see the device under My Computer in Windows Explorer. I came across these pages as I was searching the internet for "problem icy box" etc.. and found that people have been having problems with the firewire communication. So I decided to upgrade the firmware. I quite stupidly (and partly accidentally) updated the firmware with a copy of the output.bin obtained from the flashing software (listed byKez above). Then I foolishly turned the device off to test to see if it worked still.. low and behold it didn't. So, I need to know if the device is recoverable or resetable in some way.. or have I buggered it for good? The computer doesn't recognise it as a USB device any more.

    What a wally

Sure, but is it possible if my computer won't communicate with the Icy Box any more?

Not really, although my Icy Boy has come back to life on a few occasions.

Oh really? Do you know if the hardware keeps the original firmware as backup? Or don't they work like that?

When your IcyBox died.. did you do something wrong in flashing the firmware (ie. like I did and flash completely the wrong type of file?)

Many thanks for replying to my messages by the way. It is very much appreciated.

I think my problems were more power supply related to be honest. Back then my Icy Box had good days and bad days. Now it seems the power brick for it is fine... most odd. Give it another try anyway, maybe every try a different computer. I had to flash from my laptop (Intel chipset) because my then VIA based rig would spit its dummy out.
