Just seen this and i have to say that if the big name of tom cruise wasn't in this then the film would have been crap. After the hype this film was/is getting i was expecting quite a thrilling film but i left the cinema quite dissapointed and empty, I expected alot more action in the film. Don’t get me wrong the special effects and sound were superb and it started out really good but just as i thought it was all going to kick off it ended. It has an extremely bad and abrupt ending. I just felt that the film did not get going properly.

I thought it was OK. The next thing I'm going to look forward to is King Kong. That should be good.

I thought it was OK too.

The characters were typical Hollywood cliches (the divorced couple thing is getting really stale) and Tom Cruise didn't make for a convincing dock worker. The ending sucked. I know what was going to happen, but the film ended very suddenly and with very little explanation. And how comes the aliens didn't attack Boston? Their family in Boston looked completely unscathed.

The special effects were excellent, the sound was very impressive and Speilberg still knows how to add tension to a film though.

I won't be buying it on DVD.

Went to see it last night and really enjoyed it, the tension was fantastic, wish it went into why they were spraying the human remains and the red ooze a bit more, think they were doing it to fertilize the planet for their habitation possibly.

As for the ending, yeah it was quite abrupt, but thats how the origional ended as did the rock opera. Well worth seeing on the big screen just for the effects and sound alone, but it was a good movie.

It was given a 12A certificate, which I find a bit strange. There was a few people there that had kids with them and after about an hour (where the corpses were floating downstream) they got up and left with the kids. Think its a bit over the top for younger kids, was going to take my eldest to see it (8 in November) but have decided against, it a bit to much for kids methinks.

I think going for the 12A ruined this film personally. They could have made it a lot more of a "war" if they hadn't tried to cut the gore down so much.

    Very true.

They ruined it for both ends of the spectrum by -

    a) Realistically too much for a 12A, not suitable for kids in some scenes really.

    b) Could have been a lot more with some more mature scenes.

Yes, it really should have been a 15. There's way too much gore in it for it to be classed as a 12A. I mean mushing up human remains blender style is way too much. The bodys down the river was fine, but having blood splattered everywhere is over the top.

Ferral I believe the red ooze was in reference to the musical more than the book, where they came from mars the "red" planet and in the musical there was reference to a red "moss".

The deviation for me was the implication of eating of humans. Nowhere in the book/musical does it mention the aliens eat humans. However that would explain why they buried the war machines hundreds of years ago and waited for the planet to be populated (food) rarther than just turn up when the earth was unpopulated and conquer it.
    It is Inevitable.....

No, the ending was fine, it just appears you don't understand why it happened like that (hint: look up irony)

I guess it might be the same reason someone would have to read a book on text speak to understand that.

It doesn't have to end slowley for people to understand it. I haven't read the book. It's simple. The bacteria on earth to which humans are immune to killed off the aliens.

Its easy to understand as humans have been on earth for "millions of years" and built up resistance to the germs that are here. The alien invaders had been here for probably a few days before they all got wiped out via the germs.

An easier way to sum it up is the anology that its the same principle that we (UK people) all get told to drink "bottled" water in Spain, or we would get a bad a case of diahorrea. The spainish have built up an "immunity" to it whereas "foriegners" such as us english haven't.
