you know what i've just realised, since all the other laptops in the house slow down too, it must be the connection limit of the router not my laptop.

So i need to find a torrent app that does a good job of limiting the connections it uses

Depending on what router you have it may be possible to increase the mac umber of connections. Mine defaults to 64, but can be increased to 511 with about 30 seconds of telnet.

he telnets into the router (kind of an advanced way to change setting you many not be able to get to on the config page). and it takes him about 30 seconds to make the changes

It depends on the router. Telnet itself is pretty difficult but you can use premade commands most of the time so it's not to hard. For me it is simply a case of logging on and entering "modify nbsize maxipsess 511"

What router do you have? There's probably a site out there with all this info on already.

actually, internet is going pretty good now. one of those settings must have done the trick.

wasnt the connections in torrent settings cause i actually increased those.

might be the DHT thing and using an external upload limiter after all

It sounds like it was the DHT, it can suck up loads of bandwidth on a large torrent. Considering most people run 5-6 large torrents at once it soon gets out of control. The upload limited will also help lower the background bandwidth usage caused, but scrapes, tracker updates etc. Most are ignored by bandwidth limiters in the torrent itself.

It won't have been DHT. That only uses a few KBp/s at the most.

Slow browsing can be caused by two things when it comes to torrents, saturated upload and too many connections.

Heres my settings for utorrent (on VM 20Mb) - my upload is set to 80% (25% when gaming) of upload connection speed.

I can basically browse, play 3 x Eve online accounts and down load a few torrents with no ingame lag or web page slowdown.

Check if you are getting Event ID 4226 in the Event log, if so you could have a look at this

If possible try to overclock the router (but make sure you backup your settings first!).

You could also change the router QOS settings to prioritise browsing. In doing so you could also increase the torrent bandwidth as browsing would still have priority.

    Hope it helps.

heh. yeah, limit the connections in uT to something reasonable, and limit the bandwidth to give you enough spare room for TCP_ack and browsing (id say about 10-15%). You shouldnt need to play with the max connections of the router via telnet. If you set that too low and uT is still using many connections, you may cause periodic crashes of the router - which is annoying - trust me. Also, what version of uT are you running, i cant remember which version number it was but I had fairly huge problems with one of them...possibly updating to 1300 was the solution, cant remember numbers quite...and i'm not torrenting atm, and a long way from my boxes.

Use that, set bittorrent to lowest and job done. Neat app.
