    strange behaviour...

My internet connection is starting to act really strange.

Its a wireless setup and my end is revievieng the internet via a usb adapter from a netgear DG834G. The strange thing is that the connection went really slow all of a sudden and dropped for about a minute. Then when it came back all of the data (well websites with saved passwords) seems to have been forgotten. the connection is now dropping now and then,

whats the problem? is there a solution?

it sounds like someone that lives near you is using the same radio channel! try changing channel and see if that works.

That doesn't necessarily mean much, get hold of Netstumbler and it'll show you any networks with the SSID hidden.

I don't think it's a wireless problem, if your PC lost the saved passwords and so on then it sounds like a Windows problem rather than a network problem.

I know with my DG834GT when it gets 'hot' it does funny stuff like dropping wireless and wont reconnect. A swift restart of it normally sort it (Found having it vertical helps it stay warm rather than hot)

Crikey, I think you might have a malfunctioning bit of kit here matey - I've had the same router left on constantly for about 2 years with no over-heating issues at all...

Does anybody else have this prob?

Hmm i actually think the problem may be something to do with the line. Every time the phone rings the internet just seems to stop. im not sure if it re-connects whilst the phone is still bieng used though.

    heres the setup.

    MASTER SOCKET

    |
    |extension cable (6m ish?)

    BOADBAND FILTER ~~~~~~~~~~~[PHONE]

    [DG834G] * * * * wireless * * * * [PC 2]
    |
    |
    |

    [PC 1]

Both PC's Seem to get disconected at the same time and it takes about 3 mins to reconnect. Im not sure what the problem may be though.

    any help appreciated. Thanks

It sounds like a filtering problem, so try the following:

    - Get a new filter
    - Remove the extension cable from the equation, try having the filter and router conected to the BT master socket.

But the diagram shows that PC2 is using wireless - what's to stop you moving the router and doing some testing with PC2?

If the router and PC1 need to remain at opposite sides of the room I'd always recommend to have a longer cat 5 cable between the PC and router than a longer telephone cable between the router & telephone point.

Yes, tigerboyce-san I think you should move your adsl filter + Netgear closer to your master socket. Having 6m extention is kind of a waste to me if you're using wireless router. Or is PC1 connected to Netgear by ethernet? If so can't you get another cheap wireless adapter and connect both PC wirelessly? If location of your phone is worrying you, can't you get extention for your phone rather than having extention for your router?

yeh its connected by ethernet. I did have a 10m ethernet cable but i lost it :/

I think ill just try a different filter for now as it was okay for the past 5 or more years of using broadband although this was a new filter about 2 months ago. I got loads so i can give that a try. If its still a problem i can change the setup but id rather keep PC1 wired for now as my PC2 will be leaving with me for uni in only a month or so

You haven't had another bit of equipment plugged into the phone line? I had this at a friends house after they had SKY+ installed and the engineer didn't put a microfilter on the phone connection for sky.
