Signed my mother up for the standard package on Sunday.
Probably more than she needs in truth but her 56k dial up drives me mad when I visit.
Hopefully it will all go smoothly or I'll get the blame as usual ...

according to this pic it is indeed a speedtouch (kind of expected). its rubbish and will end up annoying you

Yeap - same internals as the 1 I've linked to, just a fancy new customised menu system.
I've found running the router upside helps with this. Whoever designed this router did not take into account the basic laws of thermodynamics because HEAT rises so the grills cut into the bottom are not much cop.
I've ended up sticking a 120mm case fan blowing into mine in order to make it a bit more stable but the next thing I'll be getting is the DG834N router to replace this.
I've not any problems with it yet, mind you my PC is hardwired to it and the wifi isn't used often. the GUI on the one I have looks slightly different to the one on the previous post there.
What are the more recent netgear routers like? I always found it to be a pain in the rear configuring port forwarding on my old D834G.
Well, I switched last night - what an improvement!
Easy to set up, and I'm now connecting at 5700 ish, so it's plenty quicker and only £7.50 a month! Oddly, they don't offer the 20mb in my area even though it's LLU enabled, and it's running on ADSL2.
Still, I'm happy as!
that might be because they know your too far from the exchange to make use of the 20, rather than anything to to with the exchange itself.
glad its gone smoothly for you

I'm only 2 miles as the crow flys - I thought that was relatively close in ADSL terms?
Depends on SNR and other factors as well
If your 2 miles then you should in theory get about 10-12 Mb max.
However the exchange might not be ADSL2+ enabled as yet so you've got the slower speed until it gets switched over.
Crow flies isn't always the magical path a BT line takes. Could be even longer
Take my line for example.
My exchange is 682 metres as the crow flies, and 1.13km by road, but from my attenuation it is 2.03km. Using the speedtouch router. If you are already with a ADSL2+ provider try to find your attenuation from your router. Only attenuation values on ADSL2+ will give accurate info as ADSL has lower attenuation due to using lower frequencies. Those stats before are calculated by averages. But you never know your line might be better or worse.
Trial and error says you should have around 45dB downstream attenuation. Which should get you synced at 7200kbps on adsl2+
It may be higher due to a longer line and therefore why you have a lower sync.
Things that can help are removing the ring wire from your master socket. 2 and 5 are the only wires needed. 3 is the ring wire that isn't neeeded unless you have a reaaaaaaaaaally old phone. Also try connecting to your test socket if you have the NTE5 BT faceplate. Bad extension wiring can lower the signal too. Another tip. Try routing the cables away from RF signals. Mobiles, PC's and wireless stuff. If you have a cordless phone base then make sure its not near that neither.
Theres a few other things that you can try but I think these are the only ones you need to try out if you want to improve your speeds

How do I check the s/n ratio with this O2 router? Can't seem to see it on the menus? :S
Well, I just disconnected the 3rd wire - I'm now showing a much slower speed of 4627 rather than 5700ish.
I'm gonna reconnect it in a minute to see if it improves again. Gonna be gutted it if doesn't.
what router have you got? the Speedtouch 780WL?
it shouldnt be giving you a lower sync. thats quite weird.
I'll stay on now to try and help you find those stats.
Try this link SpeedTouch Stats
if you got a speedtouch it should lead you to the stats page. Paste what info is there.

It's the standard O2 router, whatever that is - quite a big plastic thing.
Gonna go reattach the 3rd wire as well, see if it improves. Back in 5!
Right - scary moment there. 2 of the wires pinged off, and I couldn't remember which was which. Managed to get it working though obviously, although the 3rd wire is still disconnected. It's connected at 5557 now. Still a few hundred off what it was though.
always take a pic. or write down what colors are to which number. although it doesn't matter on the polarity a teeny amount of phones may be angry that it isn't. anyway then try connecting the ring wire back and see if it improves it. I don't see why it should as the ring wire acts as an aerial introducing more noise on the line. also check the link out in my previous post. that should lead to the router stats page. post the text starting from the Uptime. Like mine.
