    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

Right had a spare half hour so decided to go through all the channels to see which was best. Channel 11, 12 and 13 were all great. Settled on channel 11 which now shows very good signal strength and 72mbps (occasionally drops to 65- might stay on this for a bit but goes back to 72- or 52 for a few seconds)

But.........................speed test on thinkbroadband is still showing 5mb or 4,4 mb sometimes. Only objects in the house that have changed are a printer that is sitting next to my pc on the floor next tot eh wireless adapter. And also a wardrobe that was moved from my 3rd floor room to the 2nd floor. Very odd problem!

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

what kind of speed do you get when transferring files files over wireless (test this with one of the systems wired, then you only have one wirless hop).

You could try moving the USB stick by using a USB extension cable, placing it in front of the PC, above it, over in the corner, etc.

Might also be worth having a go with Directory Opus (http://www.gpsoft.com.au/Intro.html) to transfer the files for a speed test. This will probably be faster than windows, and will give a more accurate transfer speed.

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

The usb adapter is at the front of the pc. Never transferred anything between any of the devices. May try a file transfer at some point if the problem continues any longer.

edit: Just logged onto a few server I play day of defeat source on and my ping does not go above 30. One on server I use it doe snot rise above 10 even with a full server. Not sure if that means anything really.

ok, a USB extension would also let you change the orientation (pointing up instead of straight out for example).

Might be worth a shot, It's the only thing I can think of at the moment

I would try that but for the fact that last week it was in the same position with a speed test showing 9.3mb

Have contacted belkin so hope they have some more ideas.

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

But as I said, something out with your control may have changed

Doing a file transfer speed check would be interesting. If you can get more than 5mbit on the file transfer, then it isn't the wireless that is limiting your Speedtest results, it's something else on the PC.

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

If it was the wireless router I would expect my laptop to show similar results to the pc. As for it being something on my pc i can't find anything lol

If the belkin ppl tell me to update the firmware I will not be happy lol

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

Just had to move my pc to the 2nd floor as my room is being painted etc When I took the wireless adapter out I heard something rattle in it. So gently shook it again and i could hear the rattle again. I'm now thinking that this may be the cause of my speed problems. Anyone else think that this could be the problem?

    Re: Odd wireless speed problem!

I would have thought it would work or not. But I guess if part of the antenna had broken that could cause problems.

As I said before, try and cross network file transfer, if that is faster than you are getting with the speed test, then it isn't a wireless problem and you can stop worrying about it. If it is just as slow, then yes it is likely to be a wireless issue.

Either that or temporarily wire the PC and try speed test it again. If you get a better result then it is a wireless issue. If it's the same result then it's the PC/Windows.
