thanks for that info harkin...i'm not gonna do that as its too risky and also voids the cpu warranty.

My next question is to any expert who can advice me regarding the vcore. I have been told on another forum that @ 2.5Ghz, i can knock down the temperature by stepping down the voltage to 1.25v or possibly even to 1.15v.

In your opinion, is this possible and safe to do? and if so, can anyone tell me where i can find this option is the BIOS on my ASUS P5B mobo?

    thank you so much!

    Why 2.5ghz?

If you want, you can set your voltage really low to start with and see how high you can go stably.

Just change the vcore from auto to the voltage of your choice.

so for example, say i want to goto 3ghz..what in your opinion is as afe voltage, or does that not matter?

As Clunk will prolly say there is no 'safe voltage'. All Cpu's and motherboards etc run differently and some need more and some need less volts. So the best thing to do is forget about voltages, up ur Fsb until the sytem becomes unstable, then if u stiil have enuf headroom with ur temps u can up ur volts and try Oc some more. Theres no point upping the volts until u reached the point where it becomes unstable

You might hit 3Ghz on 1.25V, just step down to ~2.6Ghz and work your way up.

hello clunk or any other genius out there...

well with my cpu o/c @ 2.5Ghz, i knocked down the voltage to 1.25v...the cpu temp went down to:-

Intel TAT in my opinion is the most accurate as its been designed by Intel for the c2d.

My next stage was to up the speed to 2.8Ghz, whilst keeping the vcore @ 1.25v, but this is where is the problem is as orthos test immediately reported an error, atlhough the temp was below 60C Max. Also the pc froze and would not boot again...i had to reset the CMOS Jumper to get back in. I want to squeeze out the best speed, whilst keeping safe temp, so what should i do next?

That 55/56C temp was good Considering its overclocked.

I'll have to let someone else help you get higher than that though because I'm no overclocker. As long as you can keep your load temps at 60C or lower though, you are doing good.

One other thing I wondered, is if you could try things with that big side fan disabled. It may be helping, but theres a possibility it is making things worse. Usually the more air coming in to the case the better, but sometimes a big fan like that can blow too hard on the CPU fan, and it can disrupt its airflow and ability to cool the CPU. It might be worth trying anyway, because its usually pretty easy to disable a fan temporarily. (unplug its lead)

Depending on how hot the room was, I still think its a bit too high.

    As already mentioned...

The board could be reading the temps wrong.

    The CPU sensor is wrong.

The heatsink mounting isnt quite right.

Too much, or too little thermal paste (looking at the pic, maybe a bit too much).

As it is, try the desk fan thing again, before you change anything. Aim it right into the case and make a note of the before and after temps idle and under load.

And make sure your ambient room temp is <25C, blowing hot air on something isn't going to cool it down, no matter how fast it's moving

well thanks guys for your help. Let me update you as what i've managed to do after messing around with the voltages settings in BIOS.

FAIL = Intel TAT, Orthos, Windows froze or the pc didn't boot/rebooted whilst testing etc

PASS = No problems, even whilst testing in orthos or TAT.

    FSB / RAM
    ----------
    390 / 780 @ 1.3000V = FAIL - (2730Mhz)
    390 / 780 @ 1.3125V = PASS - (2730Mhz)
    400 / 800 @ 1.3125V = PASS - (2800Mhz)
    420 / 840 @ 1.3125V = FAIL - (2940Mhz)
    420 / 840 @ 1.3250V = FAIL - (2940Mhz)
    420 / 840 @ 1.3375V = FAIL - (2940Mhz)
    410 / 820 @ 1.3250V = PASS - (2870Mhz)
    415 / 830 @ 1.3250V = FAIL - (2870Mhz)

As you can see above, I managed to push the speed to a best of 2870Mhz, which is getter better by the day, lol

Even in Intel TAT, the max temp i got was 65C and in orthos i managed to stick to 60C or below.

Now my next objective is to ask the experts, can you guys spot any combination that I might have missed out? For example my RAM runs at 800Mhz, but i can squeeze it to 820Mhz..can i adjust anything else in the bios, such as ram voltage to get somemore speed from the pc?

Once again guys, thank you so much for helping me...its taking time, but i'm sure i'll get there in the end .

Youll probably notice that the pc is actually slower at 410fsb than it is below 400fsb, this is because of the chipset strap changeover. The ram performance takes a battering from around 400-460fsb.

You can try giving the ram a notch more voltage.

you right clunk mate...its pausing a little, but there's another problem mate.

At 2870mhz, orthos test ran for 45mins and suddenly threw out a whole load of errors and stopped.

So what should i do now mate?

Since the corsair seems to be unstable at anything above 800Mhz, is there a way where i can push the 400Mhz FSB higher, but still keep the RAM at a maximum of 800Mhz?? If so, how?

You can try adding a notch of voltage to the ram. When you start doing this, its best to put a fan directly over he ram.

    hi clunk mate,

i tried this by putting the voltage of the ram to 2.1v, but as soon as Intel TAT runs, the pc reboots.

just realised a bigger issue. I ran the 3DMark06 test and my score is absurd!! I'm only achieving marks just above 3000 and i think its down to a graphics card bottleneck as i was getting betweem 0 - 12FPS on my 8800GTS gfx card.

I reset the bios to AUTO, so everything ran at normal and now the score is much better @ 7500+. Is there a setting which i can adjust to stop the Graphics bottleneck?
