    Re: Weirdest thing ever (pics)

i got one from flea bay for a s478 it was about £2.50 including the postage

    all i can find is

Find Bracket+Backplate for AMD CPU Socket AM2 M2 Motherboard on eBay within For AMD, Motherboards, Desktop PC Components, Computing (end time 05-Nov-07 18:59:25 GMT)

£8 is steep and its from HK
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

that would be extremely helpful - and also should come with everything heavier than a stock cooler if indeed it exists

I don't know what you mean? What will it screw into?

On mine, the bracket has 2 parts. The black plastic part on the top of the motherboard (which broke), and a metal part on the back of the motherboard. The front part of the bracket screws into the back part (with the motherboard sandwiched in the middle).

the backplate, rather than going via the black mounting thing (this is usually taken off)

    Re: Weirdest thing ever (pics)

    Wow.

It is at these times I'm reminded why I prefer heatsinks that screw down to the motherboard... (Zalman CNPS9500AT here). I've had this sort of thing happen on boards going back to the Socket 7 days -- an S7 AMD K6-III/500 board that suffered Spontaneous Heatsink Clip Failure.

Then there's the Shuttle HTPC that one of my friends bought. The clip broke, and Shuttle refused to help ("you've obviously dropped the machine"), so I machined him a new one out of fibreglass mat and epoxy. That lasted until he pushed the CPU Vcore too far during an overclocking experiment and deep-fried the chip and the motherboard...

    "Philpem, King of the Dremel!"

    Holy thread revival batman!

This wouldn't be after reading my input into the other one would it? - otherwise it's a bit random.

    Re: Weirdest thing ever (pics)

I've not had that on an AMD board, but have had it happen on an intel socket478 before, non standard cooler cliped into the plastic bracket and locked down with 2 sprung arms, the plastic one of the arms locked into snaped and the cooler fell off.

The Asus Slient square cooler replace the top and bottom AM2 retention bracket with a metal one, however it's very different from the standard retention bracket so I doubt you could use it for any other cooler.
