Re: Q6600 or wait for Q9450?

it's not like your computer isn't going to cope, the new 45nm are coming out and within a few months you'll have a faster, cooler processor. i'd wait (i actually am before upgrading), obviously if your an overclocker and can wait a little the new chips should do even better than a g0 stepping q6600! i even heard that it might be cheaper as well...at the very least the same price.

so if you can wait a few months wait!

Q6600's are known to clock 3.6 GHz very doable with decent cooling.

Q9450,s who knows what they will do, the x8 multi means you'll need a 500 fsb to reach 4 GHz, is it worth it? haven't even seen an engineering sample, so can't say.

If I were a Q6600 owner (I'm not) I wouldn't be rushing out to upgrade to the Q9450 there are too few apps available that will push a Q6600 at the moment so why bother.

If your talking about the Wolfdales, the E8400 & E8500 is what I would be looking at.

Re: Q6600 or wait for Q9450?

In retrospect, now that Intel has allegedly delayed the release of the Yorkfield, people who recently upgraded to the Q6600 can probably feel relieved that their CPU won't depreciate for another few months (I seem to remember someone pointing out that prices has gone up at Scan). For me, though, it's a bit annoying, I wanted a £125 Q6600

just o/c that E4*00 some more.

over here in taiwan they hard mod the E4*00 series to run at any mhz upto 3.99ghz, (al gore voice) im totally serial!, you can choose the FSB you want along with the multiplier, some of them max out at certain speeds but the lowest is like 3.4, i had a chart link somewhere, i'll try and find it, but its mostly chinese but you'll get the jist of it.

also they sell them off the shelf for like under 80 quid

lol - (although, was he "moaning"?)

Yeah, I'm up for the Q9450. I've got a system I'm more than happy with atm, although a certain current game would make it into a CRYing SISsie for sure.

    Computer-wise, I'm planning to get:
    1. 9600GT
    2. Nehalem
    3. Q9450
    4. X-Fi Pro
    5. 64gb SSD

    (... in that order.)

I'll buy the 9600gt quite soon. When I get a Nehalem platform/mobo, it should just "slot in".

(Note: Apparently, Nehalem is 2008Q1, not 2007Q2. Oh, well, 6 months... WikiPedia originally said NEHALEM was being released 7Q2, but I think that was just the Q9xxx CPUs. Not really sure.)

When I get the Nehalem mobo, I'll get the q9450 - hopefully on an "improved" stepping, and at a lower price.

As for the other two, they will arrive "when they arrive"...

    And 64GB SSD's were running £500+ lol

I'm not really seeing a major benefit for desktop computing anyway. I mean eventually we all of course we probably move over to it but wait for them to make one with reasonable storage for modern computing at a reasonable price.

When SSD's come down, they'd be nice to get just for holding the OS, for fast boot times, and any really demanding non-gaming applications I guess (seeing as games would take up too much space too quickly)

You're correct. I beg your pardon. I meant to say:
I thought they were 2008q2, but actually they're 2009q1. (I.e. not "I thought 2007q2, but actually 2008q1 (which is now).)
    If they're end of 2008, that's a slight improvement.

I know, I know - but "without dreams, we would have nothing to sleep about". (Yes, I'm writing this at 2am, so maybe I need more dreams...)
Yeah, I wouldn't want to pay that much.

I'll look into that, but I thought, following Intel's Tick-tock strategy, the 45nm Yorkfield' (Quad Penryn') CPUs would be "drop-in" compatible with the 'late-2008' Nehalem Motherboard releases.

As I hope I inferred above, until I've read several reviews from Tom's/Hexus/Anand/etc, endorsing Nehalem and a particular CPU choice, I won't buy, anyway. So, I'll get my Q9450 (probably) when I invest in Nehalem.

I wonder what will be happening DDR2-DDR3 wise, come the end of '08?

The current Q6600/Q9450 mobos (P35/X38) will be starting to look dated then, just as 975X/P965 is starting to now. What will compatibility be like, for current CPUs?

I don't really know what I'm saying, here. Anyone care to unravel?

Re: Q6600 or wait for Q9450?

I really don't know how the late Penryn CPU's could be 'drop-in' compatible with early Nehalem motherboards: unless currently information are wrong, it'll have a widely different number of pins! Going from 940 pins to 939 pins required a new motherboard. So unless Intel has something very special in mind, I don't see how they will manage to make current CPU's (775 pin) compatible with motherboard with 715/1366 pins (the two rumoured sockets for Nehalem right now). Unless, of course, they made a 715/1366 pin Penryn. But if they did, it would be kind of silly to buy, since it is likely going to be just before, or perhaps at the same time as the release of the Nehalem.

DDR2-DDR3 wise, I don't see the picture change much. Maybe the momentum will begin to change, but look how long it took more than a few months for DDR2 and DDR to be priced the same per GB, and even longer for DDR2 to become cheaper than DDR. Of course, eventually we'll probably see something similar to what we see today: vastly cheaper DDR3 to everything else, but how long has it been since DDR2 was released?

Re: Q6600 or wait for Q9450?

If your upgrading for gaming then get a dual-core wolfdale. An E8200 is about £115 on SCAN. It'll overclock more than a quad as well. Gaming wise is all ablut dual core for the foreseable future.

If you balance that with video work or rendering then you might as well get a nice penryn. Off course it's more expensive almost double the E8200 right now.
