Re: Q6600 Vs E8500 for OC & Games

Interested in reading this thread. I've been planning a system based on an 8500. I'm still favouring the 45nm C2Duo over a Quad at the moment, despite reading this here.

It's not such a clear cut decision but I personally would rather be running two cores efficiently than wasting the potential of quad cores - I just don't see myself getting the best from it and that would irritate me.

cotswoldcs you're passing it on to me, I have had a liking for the Q6600 for sometime now, now im feeling like you do

Bah! No, m going to get a quad! even if its wasted, I want 4 cores to show off, I like showing off...

you might be wasting it today but tomorrow you may need it for your latest games/apps

think about tomorrow not today unless your rich and can upgrade again tomorrow then fair play get the dual core

first generation of any tech is not good. and i bet my money nehalem will be the same so to all those who are waiting on that, it will be maybe two years from now till there affordable and have better performance. todays quad will last at least a good year before apps and games make good use of it

If you have any kind of overclock that good ona E8** core then it will be far from efficient......

How does the Q6600 waste the potential of 4 cores?
Ok so its not as effective as the quads with higher fsb but its hardly wasted. I think if you built two machines, one with the quad and one with the wolf, you would find the wolf to be a waste of the money you spent considering it would be about the same as a quad.

Wolfdales are not overclocking chips in the same way that the 65nm ones are and the energy efficiancy is not massively different as far as i know.

I'm in a similar situation and I'm still most tempted by a E8500 [which I have on order at SCAN]! The advantages being better power efficency and better performance straight from the box!

I'm suprised how much that I do benefits from quad cores - I'd certainly not even think twice about going with a 2 core solution in light of this.

Performance out of the box i can agree with, if you dont plan on overclocking at all then yeah but otherwise... not worth it

Re: Q6600 Vs E8500 for OC & Games

Well I got a message through from SCAN saying that there was a E8500 in stock if I wanted it, so I went ahead and confimed. I can always upgrade to a 45nm quad when the prices come down if I notice performance slipping!

Re: Q6600 Vs E8500 for OC & Games

I know that the Q6600G0 overclocks really well but how about the newer 45nm Q9450? The difference in price between the 8500 and theQ9450 isn't that much (just over £20) and would be enough to tempt me to go quad core, providing it's a good overclocker.
