Re: Intel Q6600 SLACR: 1 yr old & the least depreciating CPU in history?

Meh!! I probably will not upgrade to a quad core for the short term if prices are going up that much. Any Core2 dual core processor running at above 2.8ghz and with 2mb to 6mb of cache is enough for most people. I think that quad cores will need to drop below £100 if they are to be as common as dual and single cores at the moment. I really hope that AMD comes out with something decent(and good value) soon otherwise it will take a long time to happen! The main reason why there are good budget CPUs is because of the competition between AMD and Intel at this level. However the competition at the higher end is weak.Hence the prices will be relatively static! Look at what is happening between ATI and Nvidia in the graphics card market. We need more of that competition in the CPU arena!!

Any Quadcore is extremely quick for most people. I'm sure most dualcores are too.

What I do object to though is companies selling Vista with 1gb of ram, or even 512mb on laptops....

I agree!! 1gb should be enough for Vista Basic or any flavour of Vista when all the glossy effects(and indexing) are turned off.

Bizzarely the Q6700 is currently cheaper than the Q6600 at scan...

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600: £155.28
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700: £152.46

I love the fact that my CPU has depreciated by £3 in 14 months. Awesome.

We all do, although now you've mentioned the Q6700 at that price maybe it'll go up too now

Re: Intel Q6600 SLACR: 1 yr old & the least depreciating CPU in history?

yeah there are other *fake* non true barton core chips that sell for upwards of 75 to 85 quid! google athlon xp3200+ for a bit of old skool $$$.

i think because they were the last of the top range old athlons they sell well for people using them in servers.

theres also a lot of demand in europe for people still hanging on to the top end of the old hardware, and the 3200 was pretty much as good as you could get - almost.

Is it uncharitable to think of people who spend good money on really outdated hardware as imbeciles? £80 would get you a 2.6GHz AMD X2 and a 780G motherboard and they buy tat with it!

Re: Intel Q6600 SLACR: 1 yr old & the least depreciating CPU in history?

true, but in some co ntries such parts arent even for sale at all, let alone stocked.

i have a friend who's family business purely builds rigs out of old, and i mean OLD parts from things like an old Dell 486 - wacks a newer cd drive in and they ship them to nigeria.

people and businesses pay for 'show' items and things liek hoovers, just to show prosperity. they dont usually even use them, its to make them look wealthy. quite sad really, in todays money grabbing world.

Re: Intel Q6600 SLACR: 1 yr old & the least depreciating CPU in history?

    LOL! its big business!

my auntie also, another example, went to st vincent in the early 1990s, and stayed with a family there working for a school. as a leavign gift, she asked if they wanted something to say thanks.

the mother asked for a hoover.

my auntie, confused as to why they wanted a hoover, mentioned that they didnt have carpets and broomed the dust away.

apparantly, they wanted a hoover as a decoration to the house, to sit in the corner where we would have a working tv. this hoover wouldnt be turned on, just polished and dusted as a trophy of wealth.

what a world we live in!
