Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

Okay, that seems like a decent choice, it compresses down pretty well to about 85ish MB. I used the normal profile on the latest stable release. All stock, specs are in my system spec to the left <.

Not sure how to get the encoding time, couldn't find it in any of the logs? But avg fps (in encode log) was just over 29.3fps. MD5 of the output file is 2f3890b135365e940276fabfb50354b4

    What settings did you use??

I was also thinking of a WMV or MPG HD clip too.

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

Just the default settings for the Normal profile. I reckon an .avi (MPEG2?) would be good to add too, they're usually huge and compress down fairly well. Big Buck Bunny is available in a number of formats, including a DVD iso which should be a good test for Handbrake, but it's a bit of a large download...

I have an X6 1100T I'm willing to throw at this. We could do with a new thread however along with base conversion settings and hardware set ups; i.e. RAM speed/capacity and so on.

Edit: I can also drop cores in my bios as well so i can offer everything from single-core results up too hex-core.

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

Other things to take in to account is the fact handbrake by default sets the process priority to below normal, so other things running take precedent, may be wise to change this to high for everyone in the CLI/Systems options so we get a equal result across the board.

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

Yeah all good points there. Things like turbo core should also be noted, and setting process affinity in Task manager might be enough - it could have a core to itself then rather than sharing with background tasks which would happen if only a single core was enabled in BIOS. But then it might be a case of setting affinity as quickly as possible after starting the transcode, so possibly not the most accurate way...

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

    I found a 1080p WMV trailer too:

    http://blog.hd-trailers.net/tag/splice/

So would the Tron:Legacy and Splice 1080p trailers be fine?? The first is a MOV file and the other a WMV file.

What settings should we run the encodes at??

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

So are we agreed on what videos to use?? I cannot find any AVI trailers.

Are the encode settings going to normal without changing any of the other settings like the codec??

    The output as MP4 files??

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

Haha, no I chose bucks bunny for that reason, it's completely free to distribute. The best settings are anyone's guess really but I think if we stick with a default profile it will make benchmarking simpler and make it easier for people to compare the results. We can always add more videos as we go.

Edit: That list looks good to me, 1st one is done further up, I'll do the other ones later.

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

MKV seems an OK format to encode to.

I tried looking through the log and I see multiple values for FPS?? Which one is the relevant one??

    Edit!!

The Tron:Legacy HD trailer when encoded to an 85MB MKV file took 3 minutes and 46 seconds. The FPS was under 20FPS when the encode was being done.

Re: Bit-tech best hardware of 2010

I used MKV personally but I don't think it makes much (any?) difference to the encoding speed, it's just the container. I found the avg fps in the encode log.

    Which CPU is that?
