Maybe people are suggesting XP's as there plenty good enuf and A64 just gives u bragging rights and an extra 32bits u cant use at the mo.....
I'd rather stick with the XP and get extra ram of better gfx tbh as that'd b more useful.....

With recent price reductions on A64 CPU's and only a small price differential between something like NF7-S and 754 main boards I would be inclined to go the A64 route. Even though the rating is lower at 3000+ than an XP clocked at 3200+ the A64 wins hands down and for gaming there is nothing better. The on die memory controller on A64 makes the amount of cache memory less critical so even the lower end of the A64 offer outstanding performance.

My only worry with building a socket 754 system right not is how long AMD are going to keep manufacturing faster chips for the platform, now Socket 939 is out. Yes, it's bargain performance, but how much upgradeability are you ending up with on the CPU side?

Yes, I know there's an argument with the DDR-II for s939, but I think it'll be a while before they get ddr-II performance up to current ddr levels for a while yet. (it's taken gfx manufacturers a good long while to get good working ddr-II (under the monicker of gddr3) performing nicely)

According to the road maps 2005 will see no 754 A64's, of course the Sempron's will be based entirely on the 754 by then but they aren't due to go very high and if i remember correctly are going to lack the 64bit ability... 754 really is a dead end unfortunately because the chips really are competitive with the 939's... my advice would be wait till 2005 for an upgrade but i doubt i'll be able to wait that long :|

Well for my cousin's machine i know he wont upgrade again for another 3 years, his last machine was a XP1500+, 256 DDR, GF4ti4200, K7S5A mb, and a basic 2 button mouse!!

So the Socket 754 Athlon64 is just the ticket for another 2-3 years for him.

Myself im waiting till the middle of 2005, as my 9800 pro, 1GB of RAM, NF2 with soundstorm, and XP 2200+ cpu will tied me other for a while longer yet

Looking at his current spec I'd say get a decent board then if he does need an upgrade you can go higher chipwise etc...
Get the best board you can and then just get the cheapest chip that'll fit in it according to ur budget, then when it comes to next upgrade....

It will cost something like £20-£30 more for a 939 mainboard and what's the minimum CPU you can stick in a 939 because it looks like 3500+ which is £120 more than 754/3000+ There really isn't alot of choice if you must build now and with a fixed budget you simply buy what you can afford.

If you buy the XP-M and overclock that's a saving of £60 compared with A64 3000+ although you will need to buy a cooler so perhaps only £50. 9800pro £130 + £50 say = £180 which would just about get you a 6800NU so certainly worth considering. XP & 754 are both dead ends for future CPU uprades and a 6800NU will give you better gaming performance. The XP-M running 3200+ isn't that far behind and only 1.65volts you don't need anything fancy to keep it cool.
