athlon 64 is here to stay where as that agp x800 & 6800 will soon be replaced with the new pci express technology and my guess is that if u spend £350 on any agp card now (when you realy neednt bother for the differnce its gonna make against ure current monster card) u may well kick ureself in the stones later for it when the price crashes on these cards whilst they slowly get squeezed out of the hardware market by the mighty pci technology.

im also an image greedy gamer who demands resolutions of 1600x1200 with 4xaa an 4xaf and my 9800pro,s are still at ease at these settings with all the games ive got.

    once again,,my two cents.

You can get a Mobo and A64 2800 for about £160 and GF6800 128 for £180 , use your old memory and it only comes to £350 maybe less if you shop around.
You might even be able to stretch to a A64 3000.

personally i can relate to the problem ure having becouse im in a very similar dilemma myself,im in the process of also upgrading 1 of my shuttles and i was gonna go for the an athlon 64 3200 with an sn85g4 (wich i think seem a lil ugly) but then strangely lastnite started thinkin about gettin an sn45g with an xp3200 for the time being then moving to 64 later on when nicer looking 64bit shuttles and windows 64 arrive.

im litterally sitting here with my finger on the "buy" button but im scared incase i make the wrong decision lol

Unless you're really suffering laggy framerates on games you have now, then I would wait. After Christmas you'll probably be able to get a S939 board and processor with PCI-Express for what you'd pay for and AGP equipped socket 754 now.

I honestly think that right now is a bad time to be making any big upgrades.

Sorry, got mixed up, I meant PCI-E platforms use DDR2 RAM, opse Thanks for pointing that out, don't want people to go out and buy new RAM for their A64's lol.

I have no idea why I said that, memory lapse.

You can't use your 'old' memory. Athlon 64 platforms require DDR2 RAM.

Sure DDR400 is a good idea, but there's nothing stopping one from using slower memory until one can afford to shell out for the PC3200 or better stuff; the specs support it.

Yep - i'd say wait as well, i'm going to go the 939 route soon, but not QUITE yet, its one of those times where the new kit has still got that slight price premium too much. Its definitely CPU/Mem you need imo, simply to help out with movie making etc. You don't neccessarily need any more graphics power imo, not just yet.

Wait till later this year, pick up a nice 939 motherboard, some lovely memory and a beauty processor for a good £100 less than now.

Go buy yourself a nice big lovely monitor, or if you already have one a sound system to match and in a few months buy your new graphics card and mobo... Everything is stupidly pricey atm and you MAY regret your decision later if you buy now....

    Just my 3 cents

Come on Now Lads - we all saw this coming - the great upgrade drought of the skint during 2004.

The trick is to be strong and keep all your money for Xmas/2005. Then it's skt 939, new PCI-E Graphics and DDR2 - all in one shot. what a rush!

The great thing is that since Intel is already pimping pci-e and ddr2, by the time amd64 uses it, that market will already be mature..
