One word,
KABOOM!!!
Haha, i'm pretty sure this isn't the first time this question has been asked and that thread got the exact same answers too, i remember the picture in this thread being funny, long gone now though
Bres.
Yup i heard all the horror stories too.
Strange that the 400 watt Qtec i have in my old Nforce2 system has been folding 24/7 for 7 months without a hiccup
I think they are basically fine as long as you don't want to overclock. You get what you pay for
Hehe it's like the boy racers that buy a fiesta 1.1 and drive it like ferrari, then act surprised when it falls apart

Yeah I used to have one ages ago, a friend of mine had the very same model. It went bang and took out half of his very expensive computer (motherboard, processor and so on), let’s just say mine got changed very, very quickly!
Also it's worth noting that wattage isn't everything, you need to look at the amperage on the various rails. You'd also need something quite decent if you plan to use SLI.
If they are THAT bad, how are QTEC still in business ?

Read the first post and you'll have the answer. It's the same mentality as free seminars on how to make millions from property in times of depression with little or no fixed capital, how to make £500 p/w working from home if you have a home computer, lose weight now:ask me how. Somewhere in the world despite it being as shiny as the penny that was spent on it it meets a basic safety requirement and passes some test which allows it to be sold after which some poor chap shy a coin or two wll spy it and think to himself 'A-ha, this will suit my need for superior power and yet be amusingly cheap' yet unbeknownst to selfsame chap will leave him as helpless and ready to be sucked of blood like an infant left at the mouth of a South American cave where vampire bats are reputed to dwell.Originally Posted by Skii
Indeed but the point is that hundreds of Q-tec power supplies have done what I've described.Originally Posted by Wiczy
Well i have owned 3 so far and not one has done anything like you, or anyone else describes.
Some are bound to function correctly, but the point is there is a hugely increased chance of something going wrong due to the poor QC and manufacturing.
Well i won't argue with you because i can't be bothered but i have installed an awful lot of them in PC's i have built for customers and not one has caused a problem in the last 3 years.
As i said previously, if you want to overclock then get better PSU, but for normal everyday use i simply cannot fault Q-tec.
Sorry but i would have to lie to agree with you
Fair enough, I do think problems start when you use them on high spec systems, regardless of their wattage levels. I think OcUK stock them as they are fine for low spec systems.
Agreed.
I wouldn't dream of overclocking with one
Ive heard a lot of bad stories with Q-tec's
Having said that, I gave my mate my original 550 watter and its still ticking. Also have a 450watt one running in one of my servers,
It would seem that they work well in a low load enviroment.
