lucky for you but id would recommend that anyone thinking of buying one is taking a serious risk really only but one if your on a extremly tight budget and dont mind if it wipes out your motherboard and whatevers plugged in it my advice = DONT BLOOMIN BOTHER GETTING ONE .. £18 for a 550 watt psu sounds too good to be true and belive me it is :^)

I've also had problems with a Q-Tec - back when i was young, foolish and cheap. fortunately, mine didn't result in a towering inferno, rather just a PC that wouldn't boot up, but I wasn't overclocking at all at the time. I would recommend spending the extra on an antec or tagan... PSU's have become increasingly more critical as the CPU, GFX etc pull more and more power....

I'd rather spend the extra 20 bob and get a good PSU (I have a tagan) than risk a crap PSU taking everything with it.

OK guys, Here is my 600 pound gaming rig:
    3200-100
    1GB Geil value RAM-70
    19" TFT-200
    MSI RADEON EXPRESS 200 PCI-e with X300 integrated-80
    overall-450
then I will buy a 40 quid 80GB HD, a 60 quid Antec 480w PSU and would still have some money to save towarrds my 7800GT in the future So no gaming for 3 months

I'll give you my view of Q-Tec

Having owned and volt modded a 550w unit.

Cheap.....Cheap & .....Cheap (I'm not even going to tell anyone how to mod
it as its a waste of time).

Basically on a system that does not need much power there great
they do have good rails and maintain them well.

    ***However........>

On a system that needs a bit more power the PSU starts to sag under the stain
its start to lose the ability to maintain the correct voltage.

In my view a 550w Qtec = a 350watt decent branded PSU at the max
and would really only trust it upto about 300watt at a push.

Trust me invest in a decent brand...no point getting fancy components
to fry em with something like a £20 PSU.

Must agree with you. Have a look out for Hiper PSUs, I've got the 480w TypeR one, and no probs so far. Antec ones are good, and now come bundled with cases if you need a new one, it might be an option.

Fantastic looks but not as stable rails as others for the price.

Lol guys, hes actually my best mate....... As i said the psu worked fine in my rig at the time, P4 1.7Ghz (423), a geforce 2 gts, etc etc.

His own actual psu had died at the time and he needed to get his rig up asap so i donated my q-tec. So im the type of mate that will strip down his own pc to get a friend in needs up and running asap, .

Come to think of it I did upgrade his psu to a tagan a few months ago, after we put a few extra hd's into his machine.

But believe it or not my server has one running 4HD, a celeron 2.4Ghz but a very lame g/c.

    If it works.........................

I am hoping to get SLI 6800GTs in the future so I need a lot of wattage. The problem is, I dont have enough money right now to buy a expensive PSU, and this seems like the best deal. Does anyone have one to tell me wats its like?
    thanks

i havent read the rest of the thread but i know what you will of been told...

personally, i have a 550w q tec n it works well, but its not stable enough for me to entrust the life of my system with it

if u can save up that extra n go with a better company antec, enermax, hiper
theres lots of good makes out there
